Position: Junior Industrial Designer
Role: The industrial design team is an important part of the R&D team at Marco. As part of the team, a successful candidate will use a Design Thinking approach to understand customer needs and problems, to develop and refine solutions, and to champion human-centered design in the R&D team as part of new product development.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct research/empathy activities such as interviews or other ethnographic research.
2. Distil and communicate back to internal stakeholders the key insights.
3. Generate design solutions based on product specifications from concept through to completion (blank sheet of paper all the way through to finished production).
4. Visually communicate early concepts through sketching.
5. Develop and refine concepts in 3D.
6. Provide design input for improvements to existing products, through process improvements, cost reduction or resolution of quality issues.
7. Optimise designs for manufacturing capabilities of in-house production, as well as third-party vendors.
8. Generate engineering assembly and drawing documents for product release for prototype, for production quotation to external vendors, and to in-house production.
9. Maintain knowledge of relevant developments, materials, technologies and product design innovations.
10. Research, source and validate components to meet specifications.
11. Generate visual communication material for use in instruction manuals, service manuals and other production documents.
12. Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure objectives are delivered on time.
The Ideal Candidate:
1. A 2.1 minimum bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design or Product Design.
2. Good visual and spatial awareness combined with creative skill.
3. A passion for product design and innovation, and the ability to present a strong argument for the best design.
4. Must be highly proficient in 3D CAD modelling of parts and assemblies, ideally Solidworks.
5. Familiarity and proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign & Photoshop.
6. Excellent presentation, time management and organisational skills.
7. Will have confidence and ability in communicating ideas visually through sketching.
8. Will have a desire to operate in an environment of continuous improvement.
9. Knowledge of design for injection moulding, sheet metal folding and forming would be a bonus.
