Full-time news journalist for The Cork Independent
We are recruiting a full-time journalist who will be principally covering all elements of the work of Cork City Council.
The role will require a passionate interest in local democracy and some evening and weekend work will be necessary. They should be flexible, enthusiastic and willing to develop a wide array of contacts.
They will be required to report on monthly council meetings (Monday evening), as well as the decisions and projects of Cork City Council, with a view to providing the public with a greater understanding of the many functions, responsibilities and work of their council through comprehensive, clear reporting.
Key responsibilities:
1. Proceedings of council meetings and proceedings of Strategic Policy Committees
2. Meetings of the Joint Policing Committee
3. Community forum meetings
4. The role of each directorate including responsibilities, plans, and achievements
5. Interrogate manifestos, positions, and statements by local representatives
6. Features on important plans and reports issued by the council, including budgets, The City Development Plan (currently 2022-2028) and City Economic and Development Plan (currently 2024 - 2029)
7. Report on matters of public interest, including public housing, dereliction, homelessness, traffic and parking, and the impact of pedestrianisation decisions.
8. Reporting on cultural, arts, diversity, and inclusion initiatives led by the council
9. Reporting on other types of news stories.
Key requirements:
1. Experience in journalism: Previous experience in local government or political reporting is preferred but not essential. A good understanding of local democracy is vital. Strong writing, research, news gathering and interviewing skills are a must.
2. Interest in local news: A keen interest in Cork city’s development, local governance, and the issues that impact the city’s residents is crucial to this role.
3. Attention to detail: A meticulous approach to reporting, fact-checking, and adhering to deadlines. You should be able to dig into the details of policy and decisions and convey them in a way that is accessible to the public.
4. Ability to work independently & collaboratively: You should be self-motivated, able to work on your own with minimal supervision, but also work well as part of a collaborative newsroom team.
5. Photography and social media skills: While not essential, the ability to take photographs to complement your reporting will be beneficial. Posting content to social media is also part of the role.
