Reporting Relationship Occupational Therapy Manager Purpose of Post The Occupational Therapy Assistant will be a member of the Occupational Therapy team.
She/he will work under the supervision and direction of a qualified Occupational Therapist to provide a high quality and efficient occupational therapy service for service users.
Eligibility Criteria Qualifications & Experience Candidates must on the last date for receipt of applications, possess: Possess the Certificate in Health Service Skills or Healthcare Support with Occupational Therapy Assistant modules 1 and 2 at Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) maintained by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI).
Possess a relevant healthcare qualification at not less than Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) maintained by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and give an undertaking to participate in the appropriate Occupational Therapy Assistant training modules 1 and 2 within 1 year of taking up duty.
Are currently employed as an Occupational Therapy Assistant, Healthcare Assistant, Attendant, Multi-Task Attendant or in a comparable role for at least 1 year and give an undertaking to acquire the appropriate Level 5 or Occupational Therapy Assistant training programme within 1 year of taking up duty.
AND Candidates must have the personal competence and capacity to properly discharge the duties of the role.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities Provide assistance to Occupational Therapists working in the assigned clinical area(s).
This role includes supervised or directed service user contact as well as assisting in the day-to-day organisation and running of the OT service.
Clinical/Service User related: Read and be familiar with the therapy plan, goals and progress notes for each relevant service user.
Participate in the provision of individual therapeutic interventions as directed by the Occupational Therapist including: Personal Activities of Daily Living (PADL) training Domestic Activities of Daily Living (DADL) training Functional Transfer training Cognitive rehabilitation Upper limb rehabilitation Participate in the provision of therapeutic group interventions as directed by the Occupational Therapist including: Meal Preparation group Falls Prevention group Leisure group Participate in moving and handling of service users, when necessary, during therapeutic interventions in accordance with moving and handling techniques and Peamount Healthcares Moving and Handling Policy.
Attend to/supervise service users personal care needs, including toileting, when in therapy in a manner that respects their dignity and independence and in accordance with moving and handling techniques and Peamount HealthCares Moving and Handling Policy.
Assist the Occupational Therapist with scheduling and completion of home visit assessments / community outings, including driving of Peamount vehicle, if necessary.
Provide, apply and use aids/appliances/equipment as directed by the Occupational Therapist.
Transport service users to and from the Occupational Therapy department.
Organise and prepare services users for therapeutic interventions as directed by the Occupational Therapist.
Prepare and set up treatment areas for individual or group therapy sessions including tidying area and storing away equipment used upon completion of the session.
Clean re-usable equipment following use as per the Decontamination of Reusable Medical Devices/Therapy Equipment standard operating procedure.
Follow all Infection Prevention and Control procedures and guidelines.
Follow operational procedures in relation to: personal hygiene, storage of food and cleaning schedules in the OT kitchen.
Modify or adapt individual or group activities to facilitate individuals with reduced physical, sensory or cognitive abilities under the direction or supervision of the Occupational Therapist.
Observe the general performance, behaviour and ability of individuals during therapeutic interventions.
Record and report these observations to the Occupational Therapist.
On instruction of the Occupational Therapist document service user contacts/interventions in the relevant section of the Healthcare Record and as per the Occupational Therapy departments documentation guidelines and standards.
Obtain consent for Occupational Therapy interventions in accordance with the Occupational Therapy departments consent standards.
Develop rapport with service users and demonstrate positive attitude, respect and compassion in interactions.
Respect and maintain confidentiality in all matters of information obtained during the course of employment.
Liaise and communicate effectively with Occupational Therapy and multi-disciplinary team members as appropriate to ensure co-ordinated intervention.

Assist the Occupational therapist in their provision of practice education to Occupational Therapy students as appropriate and directed by the Occupational Therapist.

Administrative related: Record accurate service user statistics and other administrative records in a timely manner and in accordance with the Occupational Therapy departments guidelines and procedures.
Maintain professional standards in relation to consent, confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
Complete assigned administrative tasks such as filing, photocopying, scanning, faxing, formatting forms/service user materials.
Use of computer programmes as required including developing and ensuring department resources are kept up to date.

client handouts, equipment supplier lists).
Engage in IT developments as they apply to service user and service administration.
Handle telephone queries appropriately and record messages in department diary.
Monitor and maintain agreed stock levels for consumable and assessment assistive equipment in conjunction with OT Manager or delegate.
Assist with obtaining information and quotes for purchase of equipment.
Assist with equipment delivery and storage.
Assist with retrieval of stock items from storage.
Report any equipment faults/hazards when identified to OT manager/delegate.
Assist with the induction of new staff / students and orientation of visitors.
Notify Occupational therapy Manager/supervising therapist of sick leave/annual leave in accordance with the departments guidelines/organisation policies.
Engage in support/supervision, personal development planning and performance review with assigned Senior Occupational Therapist/Occupational Therapy Manager.
Participate in continuing professional development e.g.
journal clubs, in-services, courses relevant to role.
Health and Safety: Be responsible for the day to day security of the Occupational Therapy department and other work areas to which assigned, with particular awareness of fire regulations and security arrangements.

Not undertake any duty related to service user care for which he/she is not trained.

Remuneration: Remuneration is in line with HSE pay scales €34,434 (Point 1) to €43,539 (Point 9) Working Week The hours allocated to this post are 39 hours per week with 7.8 hours as a standard working day.
The allocation of these hours will be at the discretion of the Department Head and in accordance with the needs of the service.
