Institute of Medicine
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is established by the RCPI to oversee the governance and operation of matters related to education, training and professional affairs in the medicine specialties and its associated sub-specialties in Ireland. As part of this remit, the Institute of Medicine is responsible for the following:
* Promotion and advancement of the body of knowledge of medicine
* Education, training and assessment of trainees in medicine specialties
* Examinations in medicine
* Assessment of applications to the Specialist Division of the Register for medicine specialties
* Continuing Professional Development in medicine
* Support the professional careers of Fellows, Members and Trainees in medicine specialties
* Act as an authoritative source of advice within the College in connection with medicine
Role Overview
The role of the National Specialty Director (NSD) is to actively lead the development and delivery of postgraduate specialist training in the defined specialty, under the governance of the Education and Training Committee of the Institute of Medicine. The NSD shall chair the Specialty Training Committee (STC), with a minimum of three minuted meetings per year.
