The School of Mechanical Electrical and Process Engineering comprises: Centre of Craft Studies Dept of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Dept of Mechanical Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering Dept of Process Energy and Transport Engineering. It offers a comprehensive range of full-time, part-time undergraduate programmes and supports an active research community. The School has circa 2000 WTE students and 180 staff. Programmes are supported by industry-standard workshops, computer laboratories, research laboratories and other specialist facilities. A team of technical staff within the School manage and maintain these facilities and liaise with academic staff and students to provide a supportive learning environment. This Technical Officer position will be part of this team contributing as required to activities and developments across the School. The position is based primarily in Bishopstown and the appointee will report to the Head of School. Duties and responsibilities for the position The principal duties and responsibilities specific to this position are as follows: Provide technical support for a range of mechanical, materials processing/testing, automation and biomedical engineering laboratories. Ensure experimental and test equipment is maintained and operated in a safe manner. Support the management of software licensing and deployment as required across the School of Mechanical Electrical and Process Engineering. Plan future technology deployments and upgrades. Design, develop and build suitable rigs/project protypes for student laboratories and develop projects for teaching and research using applicable computer software. Carry out safety audits and risk assessments as required. Liaise with the Head of School and Heads of Department across the School of Mechanical Electrical and Process in the planning, development and operation of the activities described above. Qualification Requirements for the position Essential A relevant degree (Level 8) from a recognised degree awarding authority in the area of Mechanical Engineering or cognate technical discipline. AND Not less than three years relevant post-qualification experience. Ability to discover, analyse, verify and implement solutions to meet user requirements A strong level of technical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills and the ability to multi-task are essential. An ability to learn and grow within this position and have excellent written, communication and research skills. Demonstrated ability with regard to attention to detail.
