What you'll do
The Legal Data Specialist role is at the intersection of Docusign’s Legal, Data Science and Product functions, focused on the application of legal and contractual knowledge to deliver the highest quality data annotation for Machine Learning (ML) purposes. The role is part of the AI team, consisting of Engineering, Applied Science, Product Management, and Legal team partners globally. The candidate shall work closely with these internal teams as well as with third-party annotation vendors, drawing on their experience in legal and data fields to drive research and evaluation of data acquisition and labeling efforts to build high-quality contractual and legal domain datasets.
Responsibilities
1. Apply legal and contractual expertise to complex AI problems to help construct annotation guidelines, define legal and contractual terms for data annotation purposes, and extend labeling ground truth scenarios.
2. Understand, assist and improve the existing training data maintenance and enrichment process.
3. Collaborate with internal teams and with third-party data annotation vendors to deliver the highest quality labeling for consumption by ML team partners.
4. Work together with the AI and ML team to perform research, testing, and evaluation of existing and emerging annotation methods and technologies that could be effectively applied to contractual and legal data.
5. Develop an understanding of the technologies and methods used within Docusign product development, working closely with the product team and engineers to deliver the highest quality data annotations aligned with product development timelines.
6. Be the primary point of contact for internal collaborators to answer legal domain questions.
Job Designation
Hybrid: Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required (Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will be weekly in-office expectation).
What you bring
1. Basic BA degree in a law-related field.
2. 2+ years of experience in the contract field, contracts administration, or legal operations.
3. Ability to identify legal concepts and translate them into data patterns.
4. Ability to interpret legal language and requirements to communicate in an understandable fashion with non-legal colleagues.
5. Experience of working in a fast-paced environment focused on delivering against product launch timelines, and of working as a domain expert with multiple cross-functional collaborators.
6. Experience with legal analytics and legal terminology.
7. Understanding of and interest in data science and machine learning.
8. Attention to detail and proof-reading skills.
9. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred
1. High level of working proficiency in one or more of the following languages: French, German, Portuguese, Japanese.
2. Familiarity with legal technology (including contract systems) and with common commercial contracts used for procuring products and services.
3. Practical experience working with an in-house legal department, prior work at a technology-focused company preferred.
4. Familiarity working efficiently with data on a scaled basis preferred (MS Excel, Google Sheets, or other spreadsheet or analytical solutions).
5. Experience working in an agile work environment (Jira, Confluence).
6. Experience working in a legal-tech hybrid role such as eDiscovery or contract analytics.
7. Energy, experience, and motivation to work across global and functional boundaries.
