Position Summary:
This senior speech and language therapist has responsibility for the management and development of the speech and language therapy service to ENT and oncology services.
The post will involve working with people with both communication and swallowing difficulties.
The successful candidate will work with inpatients and outpatients who have ENT/oncology diagnoses, including patients post laryngectomy.

Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Responsibilities:
* Provide a comprehensive service to patients attending Beaumont Hospital for ENT head and neck oncology services, including appropriate clinical assessment and rehabilitation for communication and swallowing disorders.
* Work closely with other SLTs assigned to this clinical area.
* Contribute to the continued development of a person-centred care environment with emphasis on:
o The promotion of making interactions, documents, and environments accessible for patients regarding communication.
o The creation of the necessary conditions to ensure safe swallowing.
* Collaborate and liaise with all other senior SLTs to ensure a seamless and comprehensive service for patients with cancer.
* Work with patients post tracheostomy, laryngectomy, and other surgical interventions while maintaining clinical competency.
* Maintain close liaison with all relevant personnel regarding the care and management of patients.
* Develop and maintain the SLT service to assist the organisation in meeting all relevant HIQA and other standards.
* Develop and maintain expertise in managing people living with long-term illness and disability while ensuring professional standards are maintained.
* Provide SLT services across the whole service as cover if required.
* Participate in VFSS clinics, FEES clinics, and/or other instrumental assessments as appropriate. Training will be provided as required.
* Participate in the practice/clinical education of SLT students in collaboration with practice/clinical educators within the department.
* Maintain and develop professional knowledge and practice in relation to adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties relating to oncology and ENT conditions.
* Promote and develop links with a range of local services as required.
2. Managerial Responsibilities:
* Responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the speech and language therapy service to the designated area.
* Supervise SLT staff assigned to the area or in the wider SLT department if required.
* Participate in the planning and development of the service to ensure it meets the needs of patients, including developing appropriate policies and procedures.
* Engage in quality improvement to enhance the SLT service offered to all patients.
* Liaise with statutory, voluntary, and other external agencies as appropriate.
* Deputise for the SLT Manager where appropriate and in rotation with other senior/clinical specialist SLTs within the department.
3. Educational Responsibilities:
* Mentor/supervise staff grade SLTs and/or SLT Assistants as agreed with the SLT Manager.
* Engage in supervision with the SLT manager.
* Provide general support to other SLTs in the department and other agencies regarding the designated area of specialism.
* Undertake clinical supervision as a practice educator of SLT students.
* Actively involve in educating all staff and other relevant people on promoting safe swallowing and making interactions, documents, and environments accessible for people with communication disabilities.
* Attend in-service and other training as appropriate.
* Maintain continuous professional development to meet the required professional body and Registration body standards.
4. Administrative Responsibilities:
* Maintain patient records within HSE and departmental standards and cooperate with data collection systems and current administrative procedures.
* Attend staff and all other relevant meetings.
5. Other Responsibilities:
* Participate in Personal Development Planning, Professional Supervision, Peer Review, and Quality Improvement.
* Adhere to health & safety, hygiene, infection control, and other hospital guidelines.
* Undertake other duties appropriate to the office as may be required by the Speech & Language Therapist Manager.

Qualifications:

6. 1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc:
* Candidates for appointment must:
o Be registered, or be eligible for registration, as a Speech & Language Therapist by the Speech & Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU.
o Have 3 years full-time (or an aggregate of 3 years full-time) post-qualification clinical experience.
o Have the requisite knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
o Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Speech & Language Therapist Register maintained by the Speech & Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued.
* Annual registration: On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on the Speech & Language Therapists Register maintained by the Speech & Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU.
* Health: Candidates must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office.
* Character: Candidates must be of good character.
7. Desirable:
* 1. Experience relevant to the clinical area.
* 2. Membership of the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists.
* 3. Competency in the area of tracheostomy care, laryngectomy care, and instrumental swallowing assessment.
* 4. Knowledge of the Irish healthcare system.
