Job Summary:
The Commercial Accountant with FP&A is responsible for managing the financial control, cost analysis, and commercial finance aspects of the company's construction projects.
The role ensures accurate cost allocation, standard costing, and variance analysis while also providing strategic financial planning and reporting.
The position requires close collaboration with project managers, procurement, and senior finance stakeholders to ensure profitability, efficiency, and financial control across all projects.
Key ResponsibilitiesProject Financial Control & Commercial Accounting:
Manage project financials, ensuring accurate allocation of costs to Work in Progress (WIP) and gross margin tracking.
Provide financial oversight of projects, monitoring revenue recognition and cost accruals.
Conduct job costing and variance analysis, ensuring profitability and cost efficiency.
Develop and maintain financial controls to mitigate risks and improve financial performance.
Work with project teams to assess financial risks, contract profitability, and cost recovery.
Oversee balance sheet reconciliation related to project accounting, ensuring accurate reporting of WIP and contract liabilities.Cost Accounting & Variance Analysis:
Set and maintain standard costs for materials, labour, and overhead.
Monitor and analyse cost variances, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
Develop and refine costing models for better financial accuracy in tendering and procurement.
Provide financial insights into pricing strategies and cost management initiatives.Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A):
Develop financial models for budgeting, forecasting, and scenario planning.
Prepare cash flow forecasts, ensuring liquidity planning aligns with project timelines.
Analyse key financial metrics, providing insights to support strategic decision-making.
Conduct margin analysis to assess profitability across different projects and business units.
Assist in financial impact assessments for new business initiatives and contracts.Reporting, Compliance & Systems Development:
Prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, project profitability reports.
Support external audits, ensuring compliance with financial controls and reporting standards.
Work closely with the accounting systems team to enhance project reporting capabilities.
Assist in implementing improvements in financial processes, particularly within the construction finance function.The PersonBachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA, CIMA, or ACCA qualification preferred).5-7 years of experience in cost accounting, FP&A, or commercial finance, ideally within the construction sector.Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and project cost management.Proven experience in balance sheet control at the project level.Proficiency in Excel (advanced functions, financial modelling) and ERP systems (e.g., COINS, SAP, Sage, Procore).Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.Ability to communicate financial insights effectively to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.Knowledge of construction contracts, revenue recognition, and cost control strategies.Familiarity with Power BI or other financial reporting tools.Understanding of taxation and financial regulations within the construction industry.Experience in financial risk assessment and commercial decision-making.
