Job Title: Resident Medical Officer
Location: Kingsbridge Private Hospital Sligo
Reports to: General Manager
Accountable to: General Manager
Salary: Dependent on experience
Hours of work: 37.5 per week, permanent contract Rota basis to include nights as required
Job Summary:
The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) will provide a 24-hour medical service within the hospital. They will assist with the daily review of all post-operative inpatients, assist with the preparation of patients for surgery, assess any changes in the patient's condition, initiate any emergency treatment where necessary, and inform the consultant immediately. The RMO is also expected to act as a team leader in a cardiac arrest situation.
Key Responsibilities:
Emergency:
1. To be familiar with the use and location of emergency equipment.
2. To demonstrate competency in adult and paediatric life support.
3. To respond immediately to clinical emergencies / lead the resuscitation team.
4. In an emergency situation undertake emergency investigations and procedures in accordance with hospital policy and as directed by the patient’s consultant and assist in the transfer of a patient if required to Sligo University Hospital.
Ward Duties:
1. Be present and contactable within hospital premises at all times.
2. Complete a brief admission examination on each patient when required, and document clinical findings.
3. Maintain individual contact with patients, carry out ward rounds and other duties detailed by the individual hospital.
4. Attend communication (handover) rounds as required.
5. Update clinical notes on all patients attended according to best practice for record keeping.
6. Respond promptly to the request of all medical staff (Consultants and other doctors, nurses) to see any patients within the hospital and to advise or start any treatment as indicated.
7. Visit all in-patients daily and document in clinical notes.
8. Undertake specific medical procedures on patients within all departments in the hospital as requested by medical and nursing staff: cannulation, commencing IV infusions, urinary catheterisations, administration of IV drugs, ECG, phlebotomy, etc.
9. Check blood sample results and take necessary actions.
10. Assist with pre-operative/admission and outpatient clinics, if requested.
11. Prescribe medicines to take home and complete discharge letters as requested according to local policies.
12. Before going off duty ensure written appropriate communication to the oncoming RMO specifying any requirements of individual patients.
Responsibility to Consultants:
1. Inform Consultants of any change in the condition of their patients and any emergency procedures undertaken.
2. Follow the instructions of consultants for their specific regime for each individual patient.
3. Initiate and alter in-patient prescriptions at consultant's request.
4. In a "routine situation" initiate requests and treatments with the prior consent of the patient's consultant.
5. In the event of death of a patient inform the consultant, and the patient's GP (if the consultant is unable to do so).
6. Advise the Consultant immediately about who threatens to discharge themselves against medical/nursing advice.
7. See and examine discharged post-operative patients, on requests of the consultant.
Other Duties:
1. RMOs must not routinely perform the role of surgical assistant in the operating department, but are required to respond in the event of an urgent/emergency situation.
2. Perform clinical procedures as requested by consultant medical staff and nursing staff, these may include phlebotomy and the giving of intravenous drugs to patients.
3. Examine a sick/injured member of hospital staff and offer appropriate advice in respect of treatment.
4. RMOs are expected to look smart and presentable at all times, wearing a scrub top and a name badge when attending patients.
Administrative Duties:
1. Provide evidence of annual appraisal/ARCP and revalidation. Inform the Medical Director of any serious issues that arise from these.
2. Inform the Medical Director immediately of any restrictions on practice.
3. Comply with the hospital consent and confidentiality policy maintain comprehensive clerking notes and treatment records for all patients.
4. Read, understand and adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
5. Complete hospital administrative documentation as required.
6. Be familiar with Kingsbridge’s clinical policies.
7. Be aware of Kingsbridge’s clinical risk programme and report clinical incidents, drug errors and near misses.
8. Ensure correct procedures are carried out in respect of patients discharging themselves, deaths in care and coroner's requirements.
Health & Safety and Quality Assurance:
1. Be familiar, understand and adhere to all Health and Safety regulations including evacuation policy and the RMO's role in such an event.
2. Participate/assist/attend in-house trainings and scenarios as requested. This may include: fire safety, infection control, manual handling, blood transfusion etc.
3. Be aware of the promotion of effective customer care and public relations in order to promote the good reputation of the hospital.

Person Specification:
Qualifications
Essential
* Full IMC registration.
* PLAB certificate for all overseas (outside the EU) candidates.
* BLS and ACLS.
* PALS Trained.
Desirable
* ACLS where a candidate does not yet possess certification, training can be provided.
* Paediatric Advanced Life Support - where a candidate does not yet possess certification, training can be provided.

* Minimum of 2 year’s post registration experience i.e. House Officer.

* Experience in multidisciplinary models of care.
* Experience (1 year) in an acute hospital.
