Research Engineer – Machine learning for Reconfigurable RF Control
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term
Tyndall National Institute is a research flagship of University College Cork and an internationally recognised European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) encompassing materials, devices, circuits and systems. As Ireland’s largest Research and Technology Organisation (RTO), Tyndall works with global industry and academia to transform research into products in its core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-tech and the environment. Tyndall is home to a research community of 600 people of over 50 nationalities.
The Wireless Communications Laboratory at Tyndall is seeking highly motivated candidates for the position of Research Engineer to perform research on the application of machine learning to the reconfiguration of RF devices.
In particular, the candidate will develop and demonstrate AI-driven smart RF surface controllers to dynamically create RF structures that perform multiple RF functions, such as filters, resonators and transmit antennas, on a single smart surface. The surface would be adapted around real-time sensing of the environment using the Open RAN architecture and interfaces. The objective is to pave the way for the flexible and intelligent RF hardware needed for future 6G networks.
Tyndall’s Wireless Communications Laboratory is based on the campus of Trinity College, Dublin. The post offers a superb opportunity for an ambitious individual to work collaboratively on exciting, cutting-edge science at the interface between academia and industry and across multiple teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Use machine learning to create novel algorithms/approaches for the control of the RF smart surface switches.
* Create EM simulation models of the RF surface using EM simulation software.
* Integration of the developed smart surface controller with a 5G network simulator and testbed using O-RAN interfaces.
* Work efficiently with other team members in the software, hardware and testing development.
* Carry out administrative work to assist the program of research and ensure all project deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely manner.
* Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
* Contribute to the engagement on IP activities in partnership with the Office of Innovation.
* Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
* Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
* Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria
* A PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or related area.
* Typically 3-5 years’ experience in developing machine learning algorithms.
* Typically 3-5 years’ experience in EM simulation, and design of RF antenna and devices.
* A strong publication record.
* Strong communication, interpersonal and relationship management skills.
Desirable Criteria
* Evidence of entrepreneurial experience and creative skills/creativity.
* Research experience in the application of AI in electromagnetics is highly desirable.
* Skilled in mathematical modelling tools such as MATLAB, Python and/or Julia.
* Demonstrated the ability to create proof-of-concept hardware and software to validate simulation results with real-world measurements.
* Ability to work independently and initiate and drive discussions with different team members and stakeholders.
The contract will end on the 31 December 2026.
Appointment may be made on the Grade 5 Admin V Scale (B) range € 50,799- € 62,303 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
