We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong interpersonal skills to join our award-winning team at Ballymaloe House Hotel, in the role of Sommelier.
The Role
A Sommelier at Ballymaloe House Hotel is responsible for providing exceptional wine and beverage service to guests, assisting the Head Sommelier with the management of the wine program, and ensuring a memorable dining experience. This position requires a passion for wine, extensive knowledge of different wine varieties and regions, and excellent customer service skills.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist guests in selecting wines that complement their meals, providing recommendations and offering detailed descriptions of the wines.
2. Serve wine and other beverages to guests in a professional and attentive manner, ensuring proper pouring techniques and presentation.
3. Maintain a thorough understanding of the wine list, including its composition, pricing, and wine pairing recommendations.
4. Ensure all wine glasses and other beverage-related equipment are clean and in excellent condition.
5. Assist with inventory management, including wine stock rotation, storage, and replenishment.
Wine Education and Guest Interaction:
1. Engage with guests, discussing their preferences and providing information about the wine list and various beverage options.
2. Offer guidance on wine selection based on guests' taste preferences, food choices, and budget considerations.
3. Conduct wine tastings and assist with wine-related events, sharing knowledge and creating an enjoyable and educational experience for guests.
4. Stay up to date with wine trends, new releases, and industry developments to provide accurate and current information to guests.
Collaboration with Culinary and Service Teams:
1. Collaborate with the kitchen team to ensure wine and food pairings are well-coordinated and enhance the overall dining experience.
2. Work closely with the service staff to ensure seamless wine service throughout the meal.
3. Assist in training and educating service staff on wine service and etiquette, helping them develop their knowledge and skills.
Cellar Management and Inventory:
1. Assist in managing the wine cellar with Head Sommelier, including organizing the wine inventory, updating wine lists, and monitoring stock levels.
2. Collaborate with the Head Sommelier in conducting regular wine tastings, evaluations, and selection processes.
3. Participate in the development and updating of the wine list, considering factors such as seasonality, guest preferences, and menu changes.
4. Contribute to cost control measures by monitoring and minimizing wine wastage and breakage.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Previous experience as a sommelier or in a similar wine service role is essential; a strong passion for wine and a willingness to learn are essential.
2. Extensive knowledge of different wine regions, varietals, and production techniques.
3. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and confidently with guests.
4. Ability to make recommendations and provide detailed descriptions of wines in a clear and engaging manner.
5. Basic understanding of food and wine pairings, and the ability to collaborate with the culinary team.
6. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in wine inventory management.
7. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
8. Professional wine certifications or sommelier training is a plus, but not required.
Additional Information:
This is a permanent, in-person position; the nature of the industry means that this role will include a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to commute/relocate: Shanagarry: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required).
