Job Description:
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB), based in The Curragh, Co Kildare, is the Regulatory Body for horseracing in Ireland. Horse racing in Ireland is a €2.5 billion industry and supports more than 30,000 jobs. The IHRB is responsible for assuring public trust in Irish horseracing and safeguarding its reputation through robust and transparent regulatory practices, implemented with uncompromising integrity by a focused and professional team. Our Statement of Strategy 2024-2027 commits us to a relentless focus on the safety and well-being of our human and equine participants, with welfare one of our five strategic pillars.
The veterinary team has seen significant change in recent years. Key to progression of this is the development of a new Authorised Veterinary Assistant role, reporting to the Chief Veterinary Officer. This is an exciting new full-time position, focusing on equine welfare, anti-doping/medication control, liaising closely with other departments and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will be trained as a Veterinary Assistant and Authorised Officer under the Veterinary Medicinal Products Act. The role is operational, working within the Veterinary team on racecourses, training yards and other locations, with desk time dedicated to being able to see through investigations, reports and related work 'nose to tail' and opportunity to develop areas of your own interest within the scope of the role.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
1. Working as a Veterinary Assistant on the racecourse: Identifying, monitoring and sampling runners and assisting the Veterinary Officer.
2. Working as an IHRB Official and Authorised Officer of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Conducting stable inspections, out of competition testing and investigations.
3. Administrative functions as determined by the needs of the role and the Senior Veterinary team.
4. Supporting the Senior Veterinary Team in training and developing the wider team.
5. Developing specific areas of expertise and interest as relevant to the strategic objectives set out in the IHRB's Statement of Strategy 2024-2027.
6. Other related duties and tasks as may be assigned by the Chief Veterinary Officer.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
1. Experience and competence in working with Thoroughbred racehorses under pressure.
2. Track record as an effective team player, able to communicate effectively with, and get on with, people both in the team and in the wider sense.
3. Highest standards of integrity and discretion to deal with confidential regulatory information.
4. Flexibility, able to work at short notice to do what is needed and a willingness to adapt to change.
5. Meticulous attention to detail, understanding the importance of accurate record keeping.
6. Good IT skills - comfortable with Microsoft Office and equivalent systems in order to effectively share information and produce accurate, timely reports.
7. Authorisation under the IHRB/DAFM Memorandum, or ability to become authorised.
8. Genuine interest in Irish horseracing with enthusiasm and respect for its horses and people.
9. A strong work ethic with evidence and experience of going the 'extra mile.'
10. Excellent time keeping, able to work on your own initiative, conscientious and reliable.
11. Clear sense of responsibility to safeguard the integrity and good reputation of Irish horseracing.
DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES
1. Specialist equine, Veterinary Medicine or racing qualifications and/or experience in any of the areas of principal responsibility.
2. Experience of working in the racing industry in other jurisdictions.
The position is a fixed-term full-time hybrid role working across both Office and track/non-track duties. Given that racing is a seven-day sport, this role requires a willingness to work with a high degree of flexibility including availability on evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays. Training and development will be provided, in the core areas of responsibility and as needed.
The remuneration package will reflect the nature of this unique role and experience of applicants and the annual salary range will be €45,000 - €50,000. Travel and subsistence allowances will be paid in line with organisational policies and other approved expenses will be reimbursed. As this is a new role, the contract will for an initial fixed period of two years and will be subject to review thereafter.
If you are interested in the position, please submit a comprehensive CV and a covering letter clearly setting out why you should be considered and what you would bring to the role.
Informal enquiries to Jonathan Hogan via Jonathan.hogan@ihrb.ie.
Closing date for applications is Friday 28 February 2025.
IHRB is an equal opportunities employer.
