Applications are sought for Ad Astra Fellow - Assistant Professor in Digital Music Cultures within the College of Arts and Humanities.
The successful candidate will be based in the UCD School of Music, a vibrant centre for research and teaching that has played a leading role in Irish musical life for over a century. It is home to a diverse faculty of scholars and practitioners, with strengths across historical musicology, ethnomusicology, performance, and composition. The University has recently made substantial investments in music and in the creative industries, including new state-of-the-art rehearsal facilities and a blackbox theatre and media lab. UCD is now a world top 100 performing arts institution (QS subject rankings 2023 and 2024).
The successful applicant will contribute to research initiatives in digital cultures and the creative industries. They will apply for research funding and will be encouraged to apply for Horizon Europe funding, whether through the European Research Council (under pillar 1), the Culture, Creativity, and Inclusive Society research cluster (pillar 2), or the European Institute of Technology (pillar 3). We are especially keen to receive applications from candidates with interests in developing collaborations across disciplines, schools, and institutions and from candidates whose work could speak to policy issues in the digital creative industries.
Following an initial three-year period with a reduced teaching load, the successful candidate will teach on undergraduate programmes in Music and in Creative and Cultural Industries and on the School of Music's MMus Music and Culture programme. They will also supervise a fully funded doctoral student from no later than the second year of their appointment.
We seek applicants with expertise in the creative industries, interpreted broadly, and in digital music cultures in particular. Areas of interest include:
* Cross-media uses of digital music, including games, advertising, and social media;
* Mobile-based digital music cultures;
* The economic foundations and impacts of digital music-making;
* Precarity, resilience, and sustainability in digital music cultures;
* AI-generated and algorithmic music and their effects on music cultures, including ethical aspects;
* The use of music in emerging immersive technologies, including virtual, augmented, and mixed reality systems;
* Digital music policy, including in relation to copyright, income distribution, privacy and data security, and/or community safety;
* Diversity, equity, and inclusion in digital music cultures.
Salary Scale: €62,855 - €99,533 Per Annum (95 Lecturer/Asst Professor Above the Bar (7943))
Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.
