Overview of role:
Reporting to the Radiology Services, the position of Deputy RSM requires an ability to lead, guide and supervise radiographers, assistants and Clerical staff on a day to day basis. Ability to manage in a rapidly changing environment and willingness to undertake such additional duties as may be assigned from time to time are essential. While carrying out the duties appropriate to a Deputy RSM including the provision of flexibility in hours of service as required, you must also provide leadership in the delivery of specialised services.

General Accountability
The Deputy Radiology Services Manager reports and is accountable to the Radiology Services Manager in all matters relating to the job. In the absence of the RSM, they report and are accountable directly to the General Manager.
Outline of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Deputy RSM will be expected to support the RSM in the management of the Radiology Department. They will also take responsibility for patients where they will carry out diagnostic radiography or imaging procedures. In addition, they are expected to practice within the policies and procedures set out by the UPMC Whitfield Hospital. They will be required to possess a clear understanding of the Mission, Vision and Values of UPMC.
General responsibilities
1. To maintain throughout the department an awareness of the primacy of patient in relation to all clinical activities and maintain a high standard of Radiography care.
2. To create and promote healthy working relationships.
3. To demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the UPMC.
4. To ensure that each patient is treated as an individual and that privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
5. Participate in procurement.
Clinical Responsibilities
Administrative Responsibilities
1. Undertake, as team leader, responsibility on a day to day basis for the Imaging service and the effective utilisation of all resources allocated.
2. Ensure that Radiation Protection Rules are applied at all times and to be familiar with, and obey, the Ionising Radiation Regulations.
3. To be familiar with and abide by the Patient's Charter and treat every patient as an individual in terms of courtesy, kindness, efficiency and confidentiality.
4. To keep informed of all relevant policies including Health and Safety Policy to ensure maintenance of a safe working environment.
5. Work in co-operation with and communicate effectively with other team members and referrers.
6. Participate in evening and weekend work as required by the service.
7. Actively participate in the development, execution and follow up of audits within the department.
8. Support the education and development of all members of the Radiology team.
9. To be aware of all Quality Control procedures with the department, including Quality Assurance testing.
10. Maintain a high level of expertise in the safe operation of equipment and manage faults effectively as per departmental fault reporting procedure.
11. Liaise with the RSM on the general day to day running of the department.
12. Be accountable for the quality of the service provided, including customer service and technical aspects.
13. Taking part in routine daily inspection of equipment and quality assurance procedures.
14. To deal with incidents and accidents in accordance with the hospitals policy and to accurately record and report detail.
15. Maintain accurate records of equipment service, maintenance, malfunction, downtime and performance as required and co-ordinate preventative maintenance schedules in accordance with hospital demand.
16. To attend meetings and sit on committees as required.
17. Carrying out such duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned by the Radiography Services Manager or General Manager.
18. To promote and maintain a high level of staff morale hence promoting team spirit and job satisfaction among Radiographers.
19. Promote and maintain a safe environment for staff and patients. Assist in the development and implementation of risk management and health and safety strategies in association with appropriate personnel.
20. Contribute to review evaluation and development of the radiology service.
21. Take part in staff communication e.g. Team Meetings, when required to do so.
22. Initiate, support and implement quality improvement initiatives which are in keeping with the hospitals continuous quality improvement program.
23. Demonstrate the ability to plan and deliver care in an effective and resourceful manner and the ability to take the initiative to self-manage in a busy working environment.
24. Demonstrate the ability to implement and manage change.
Health and Safety: Work collaboratively with other members of the team to ensure that patient care is central to all activities in the hospital.

Professional / Education
1. Maintain up to date knowledge of clinical, technical and radiographic developments. Ensure that best practices are implemented and maintained.
2. Contribute to the development and implementation of operational policies, protocols and guidelines to ensure optimum utilisation of resources and systematic audit of such usage.
3. Develop and maintain a training function as may be required in relation to qualified staff and trainees. Supervise and assess all training as required.
4. Liaise with the Radiology Service Manager on the rotation of staff through the Department to ensure an adequate number of trained staff are available.
5. Taking part in in-service training as required.
6. To promote good relationships with other key members of the clinic staff through the exercising of attitudes which convey an understanding and awareness of the wider function of the hospital.
7. To adhere to hospital policies in respect of grievance/disciplinary matters and Health and safety.
8. Ensure that all clinic policies and relevant legislation on radiation safety is understood by staff and complied with.
9. Implement and maintain a quality assurance program for the Department.

11. To keep up-to-date with current developments in Radiology.
12. Actively partake and promote CPD activities within the department.
Qualifications & Experience:
Eligible Criteria: Essential Qualifications
1. Each candidate must possess the Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Radiography or the Diploma of the College of Radiographers or possess a qualification at least equivalent to the above as validated by CORU and hold CORU registration.
2. 6 years satisfactory post qualification experience.

1. Post graduate education in Leadership and/or Management.
