Director of Nursing
The Director of Nursing oversees the care of residents within a 56-bedded nursing home and takes responsibility for its day-to-day operations.
Main Responsibilities
* Ensure staff members contribute to the efficient operation of the nursing home and create an atmosphere conducive to resident well-being.
* Interact with residents to meet their healthcare and social care needs, maintaining ongoing liaison with external healthcare disciplines.
* Report ill health among residents and arrange for GP or professional visits as necessary.
* Liaise with the catering manager to ensure meals are adequate in quantity and quality, meeting residents' dietary needs.
* Undertake general nursing work and personal care as appropriate.
* Administer prescribed medicines and maintain relevant records according to NMBI guidelines and company policies.
* Audit nursing documentation to ensure best practice, systematically reviewing and signing off resident EPIC files.
* Promote integrity in dealings with residents' personal and financial affairs, avoiding exploitation.
* Maintain effective communication with the management board and operate a continuous improvement policy.
* Communicate effectively with residents, relatives, and others involved in the nursing home's daily operations.
* Report accidents and incidents, ensuring adherence to nursing home regulations and notifying relevant authorities as needed.
* Supervise visits and liaise with GPs to establish a good relationship between healthcare professionals and the nursing home.
* Ensure a clear and concise handover process is in place, providing reports to all staff members.
* Organize staff and client meetings.
* Establish and maintain respectful relationships with residents, promoting independence.
Budgetary and Financial Control
* Manage, monitor, and maintain budgets, taking corrective action when necessary in conjunction with the management board.
* Ensure efficient use of resources, with staff operating under principles that prioritize resident-focused, smart, and efficient work practices.
* Adhere to and implement all HR policies and procedures.
* Fulfill staffing vacancies in accordance with the recruitment, selection, and appointment policy, with support from the H.R. Manager.
* Maintain accurate records of working hours for all staff members, in collaboration with the administrator.
* Monitor and control sickness absence in line with company policy.
* Ensure all staff members are aware of nursing home policies, with regular monitoring, review, and feedback.
* Implement and manage discipline policies and procedures, as well as grievance policies and procedures.
* Provide formal supervision and appraisal of staff members, in accordance with company policy.
* Initiate training for all staff members on an ongoing basis, aligning with regulations, best practice, and company policies and procedures.
* Organize workload by forward planning off-duty to ensure sufficient staffing coverage.
* In the administrator's absence, collect and accurately record payroll data.
Marketing
* Market the nursing home positively, promoting a personal and professional profile within the local community.
* In collaboration with the management board, fill client vacancies by liaising with H.S.E. and assessing/selecting suitable residents.
* Ensure the nursing home is attractively presented and odor-free at all times.
* Make sure the viewing room is suitably presented and available at all times.
Training and Development
* Supervise and instruct staff members in all aspects of their work within the nursing home.
* Maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence.
* Attend mandatory training days/courses, both on-site and off-site, as required.
Health and Safety
* Report illnesses of infectious nature or accidents incurred by residents, colleagues, self, or others in line with regulations and company policies.
* Understand and implement the nursing home's Health and Safety policy, including Emergency and Fire procedures.
* Carry out duties as Chief Fire Officer for the nursing home, adhering to Health and Safety guidelines.
* Notify the maintenance operative of faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment, or potential hazards.
* Promote safe working practices within the nursing home.
General
* Adhere to all relevant NMBI guidelines and regulations.
* Maintain existing stocks in a safe and tidy environment, reordering as necessary.
* Maintain log books and records as required by the Registering Authority and management board.
* Be on-call for emergencies arising within the nursing home.
* Protect confidential information gained during work, not divulging it to third parties.
* Assist in accessing funds available to residents from government or outside agencies.
* Inform the H.R. Manager promptly of inability to report for duty, as well as upon return to work after any period of absence.
* Report directly to the Regional Director.
* Ensure the security of the nursing home is maintained at all times.
* Comply with all company policies and procedures within defined timescales.
* Maintain clean and well-maintained equipment.
* Perform other tasks reasonably assigned.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications
* N.M.B.I. registration
* At least three years of experience in nursing older people, within the last six years
* Three years of experience in a management capacity
* A post-registration qualification in healthcare management or equivalent
* Effective communication skills at all levels
* Leadership qualities and teamwork abilities
* In-depth knowledge of the aging process
* Genuine interest in working with our residents
* Certification of Garda Vetting Unit clearance
* Working knowledge of Health Act 2007, regulations, and standards pertaining to same
