PhD Scholarship in ResilientCrop: University College Cork invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences (BEES) and the Environmental Research Institute. The SFI-funded project “Mining for climate resilience in Irish forage crops (ResilientCrop)” will investigate the responses of perennial ryegrass and white clover to abiotic stresses like high temperatures and drought. The successful candidate will gain extensive training in plant physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics.
Designation: PhD Researcher
Research Area: Climate Resilience in Irish Forage Crops
Location: School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences (BEES) and the Environmental Research Institute, University College Cork, Ireland
1. A Master’s degree in Plant Biology, Plant Molecular Biology, or a related subject is preferred.
2. Previous experience in plant molecular biology, particularly in the study of grasses, and plant biochemistry is desirable.
3. Proficiency in specific programming packages such as R.
Job Description:
The PhD project “ResilientCrop” will focus on:
1. Phenotyping the above- and below-ground growth responses of perennial ryegrass and white clover under varying seasonal conditions, high temperatures, and drought.
2. Identifying molecular regulators (coding and non-coding transcripts, proteins) that modulate these responses.
3. Assessing the biological function of these regulators in providing abiotic stress resilience.
4. Testing the ability of these regulators to act as stress biomarkers in the field.
The successful candidate will receive training in plant physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and analysis of big datasets. Additionally, they will have opportunities to participate in several training programs within UCC.
How to Apply:
Interested candidates should send a short CV (maximum 2 pages) and a letter of motivation to Dr. Rossana Henriques at rossana.henriques@ucc.ie with “ResilientCrop PhD application” in the subject line of the email.
Last Date to Apply: 19th August 2024
This PhD position is fully funded for four years, including a tax-free stipend of €22,000 per annum and coverage of tuition fees at the EU rate. Apply now to join this exciting research project and contribute to the development of climate-resilient forage crops in Ireland!
