Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is an exciting and dynamic place to work. TUH is one of Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospitals, adult, psychiatric and age-related healthcare on one site. The Hospital has 450 adult beds with over 3,500 people on staff and more than 50 different nationalities represented. The Hospital is a provider of local, regional and national specialties. It is also a national urology centre, the second largest provider of dialysis services in the country, a regional orthopaedic trauma centre and a designated trauma unit.
TUH is one of the two main academic teaching hospitals of Trinity College Dublin - specialising in the training and professional development of staff in areas such as medicine nursing, health and social care professionals, emergency medicine and surgery, amongst many others. TUH is part of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group which serves a population of over 1.2 million across seven counties.
Overview of role:
The Clinical Engineer will work effectively as part of a team dedicated to delivering a high quality efficient service to patients and staff in TUH. They will assist with the support of medical, nursing, paramedical and clinical support staff in the application of technology.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Maintain throughout the Hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all Hospital activities.
2. Actively participate in continuing education and research activities.
3. Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Values of the Hospital.
4. Report to the Head of Clinical Engineering Services.
5. Be accountable to the Head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering.
Specific Accountability:
1. Assist with the support of medical, nursing, paramedical and clinical support staff in the application of technology.
2. Assist with the implementation of the procedures that ensure the day to day scientific and technical quality of all instruments and procedures.
3. Analyse computer and equipment generated data and present it in a form suitable for clinical interpretation.
4. Participate in research, development and innovation as appropriate.
5. Assist with the provision of maintenance services for electro medical equipment in respect of its functional, electronic, electrical and mechanical aspects to a standard of safety, accuracy and reliability consistent with its function and with professional standards.
6. Assist with advising on the selection, specification, acceptance testing and safety of new equipment and installations.
7. Assist with supervision of other staff as required.
8. Provide in-house training as required, and develop relevant skills as trainer/educator.
9. Undertake courses, education and training programmes to the level required for professional development and performance of duties.
10. Develop, as required by Head of Clinical engineering Services / Line Manager, specialist areas of interest within the fields of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering.
11. Assist with efficient management of the hospital's budget in relevant areas of responsibility.
12. Participate in academic activities as per the hospital's teaching agreements with Trinity College Dublin and with academic institutions and in other academic activities as required and directed by the Head of Department.
13. Participate, as required, in the Departments out of normal working hours On Call system.
14. All activities shall be carried out in a professional manner, at least in accordance with the Engineers Ireland Code of Ethics.
Qualifications & Experience required:
Must have:
1. Hold a first or second class Honors Degree in which Physics was taken as a major subject and Honors obtained in that subject; or hold a recognized qualification at least equivalent thereto.
2. Possess the requisite knowledge and ability, for proper discharge of the duties of the post.
In addition to the minimum qualifications outlined above, it is desirable that the successful candidate have Clinical Engineering experience in some of the following areas:
Renal Dialysis, Infusion Therapy, Intensive Care, Endoscopy, Ventilation, Diagnostic Ultrasound, Decontamination and Sterile Service Standards.
Reward & Recognition:
Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, grade code 3794. The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable. The annual leave entitlement is 28 working days per year. The leave year runs from 1st April to 31st of March each year. Normal working hours are 37 worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.
