JOB TITLE: Seasonal Assistant Boat Person
Fixed Term Contract to 31st October 2025
WEEKLY PAY: €649.00 gross per week (pro rata)
REPORTS TO: Inspector of Navigation
LOCATION: Waterways Ireland Inspectorate Office, Athlone
This role will involve weekend working & on public holidays as part of the conditioned hours.
SUMMARY OF ROLE
A temporary Seasonal Assistant Boatperson is required for the summer season to augment Inspectorate patrol staff in harbour and event monitoring duties in accordance with the Navigation Byelaws. The post holder will also be required to crew and operate patrol vessels and give a quality customer orientated service, outside of normal working hours, to the boating customer and other navigation users.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To assist Inspectorate staff in patrolling, monitoring, and recording all activities, both on and off the navigations, within the framework of the Navigation Byelaws.
2. To deliver a quality customer service to waterway users and the general public.
3. To maintain accurate and legible records of any contraventions of the Byelaws.
4. To undertake basic administrative procedures associated with the tasks assigned.
5. To ensure the safe operation of assigned Waterways Ireland vehicles and patrol craft in accordance with Waterways Ireland procedures.
6. To liaise and cooperate with staff from other Waterways Ireland Sections.
7. Comply with and actively promote Waterways Ireland policies and procedures on all aspects of equality.
8. Complete all training as required by Waterways Ireland within specified timeframes.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility and essential criteria in their application and at interview. Desirable criteria may be used as necessary in the selection process.
Eligibility Criteria
* A recognised qualification in Powerboat Handling i.e., ISA / RYA / BIM National Powerboat Certificate or equivalent.
* A valid driving licence.
Essential Criteria
* Knowledge of the Shannon Navigation Bye Laws.
* The ability to deliver a quality customer service.
* The ability to communicate, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
* Be aware of the Health, Safety & Welfare issues associated with working on or near water.
Desirable Criteria
* Knowledge / experience of operating and maintaining small powerboats.
* Good interpersonal skills and flexibility to adapt to changeable work patterns.
* Valid driving licence with categories BE or C1E included.
