This technical role will require the incumbent to perform the role of senior technical lead for the Virtualisation Core Platform team, covering small projects and to help develop the strategy, infrastructure, engineering and operational environment for the Virtualisation Core Platform. Reporting to the Storage, Backup and Virtualisation Associate Director, the individual will be responsible for managing members of the Virtualisation Team and expected to be dynamic, flexible, energetic, accountable, structured, process oriented and happy working to tough deadlines in a demanding environment. The Virtualisation infrastructure provides virtual compute based resource used to host mission critical systems and desktop services for over 3000 systems. The Virtualisation Team is an internal service provider used by the Windows, UNIX and Desktop Services platform teams to provide x86 based computer systems used to host Virtual machines on which to operate systems from D to AAA rated services.

Your Key accountabilities
1. Act as technical team lead and authority for all VMware virtualisation technologies used by the virtual platform.
2. Manage a team of 5-6 technical VMware administrators, engineers and consultants.
3. Manage the technology strategy and direction for the virtual platform in association with the Storage, Backup and Virtualisation Associate Director.
4. Maintain the health status of all infrastructure components required to support the virtual platform.
5. Build and upgrade Virtual infrastructure components when required.
6. Security and patch management of the VMware components and related support tools.
7. Provide day to day technical backup and support for the platform teams for the Virtual guest machines.
8. Proactively manage the VM platform capacity ensuring each farm has sufficient CPU, memory and disk space to host the current and future needs to support project requirements.
9. Maintain and develop relationships with the platform teams, and service providers to the VM platform.
10. Cultivate and foster relationships with other team and departments within the company.
11. Monitor issues and provide management reports on incidents and problem management.
12. Provide out of hours support for the Virtual Infrastructure.
13. Ensure all activities are compliant with security and regulatory requirements.
14. Work alongside the platform teams to provide cost effective virtualisation solutions and encourage best practices to prevent over allocation and wastage due to lack of usage.
Technical Engineering
1. Act as technical lead or representative in Virtualisation based project activities, including the development and deployment of new tools and technologies.
2. Keep abreast of new initiatives, technologies and hardware specifications, owning roadmaps and providing recommendations and key updates to line and senior management.
3. Attend VMware, Intel, Dell, Microsoft, Citrix, and other vendors business briefings and / or workshops on Virtualisation with the view on how new products and operating practices could be adopted by TIS.
4. Provide virtualisation technical guidance and assistance to management, the team and the business, as required.
Skills and experience
1. Management of a small VMware technical team.
2. Experience of owning technical strategy, creating, updating and delivering against roadmaps, running engineering projects and being accountable for the operational functions of the Virtualisation platform.
3. Excellent “hands on” working knowledge of VMware technologies, Inc. VMware vSphere 4.x & 5.x and Virtual Center.
4. Experienced in managing multi-host enterprise class Virtual infrastructure using VMware technologies including HA clusters, DRS, storage and network subsystems.
5. Strong working knowledge of vCloud Director.
6. Good working knowledge of VMware orchestrator and vRA (vCAC).
7. Excellent knowledge of HP Proliant servers. HP Blade technologies and HP Virtual Connect an advantage.
8. Excellent knowledge of Dell R7x class servers. Dell Blade technologies.
9. Good working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems, Inc. Windows 2012, Windows 2008, Windows 2003.
10. Excellent knowledge of Windows desktop operating systems and VDI implementations.
11. Strong knowledge of Citrix technologies, Inc. XenApp and XenDesktop.
12. Practical experience with related Windows technologies including IIS and Microsoft SQL.
13. Strong experience of Network / server monitoring and capacity planning tools.
14. Strong knowledge of networking technologies (DNS, VLANs, subnets, routing).
15. Natural inclination to share knowledge and disseminate information throughout all project phases with particular attention to handover education.
