Volunteer: Legal Expertise Trustee - V-SAC (Victim Support at Court)
The Organisation
Victim Support at Court (V-SAC) was established in 2005 and is the only recognised specialist voluntary service in Ireland dedicated solely to court accompaniment for victims of crime, their families, and prosecution witnesses. We are at the forefront of delivering a high-quality court accompaniment service within the Irish Judicial System and are currently piloting our second expansion project which will help V-SAC towards becoming a national service.
In line with current legislation, V-SAC directors are unpaid but vouched out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Board composition as per the Constitution is no more than nine Directors. The Board currently has seven Directors.
Victim Support at Court is seeking to appoint a Non-Executive Director with a Legal background and experience. The ideal candidate will be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister, with substantial experience working with Boards, either in an executive or non-executive capacity. Familiarity with not-for-profit financials is highly advantageous.
As a Board Member, the role of the Non-Executive Director includes:
1. Continuing the commitment by V-SAC to good governance, inclusion and to maintaining the highest of ethical standards.
2. Attendance at monthly board meetings and other organisational events.
3. Monitoring the performance of V-SAC especially against its strategic priorities and the annual work plan agreed by the Board.
4. Leading on specific tasks or strategic objectives as delegated by the Board.
5. Development of policy in relation to the above areas or others, as required.
6. Willingness to serve on ad hoc subcommittees as required.
The particular focus of this role is:
1. Knowledge and expertise to assist the board and V-SAC leadership on all legal matters.
2. Ensuring compliance with various statutory requirements for example the Charity Regulator Governance Code.
3. Attending or contributing to the General Board of Trustees and sub-committee as relevant to V-SAC.
4. Providing general expertise on all matters relating to corporate governance and any legal relevance to the activities of V-SAC.
5. Ensuring V-SAC is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit.
6. Acting in the best interest of the charity and with a duty of care.

The term of office for the Director will be three years. Induction will be provided on appointment.
The candidate must be able to dedicate sufficient time for Board meetings, Sub-committee meetings, as well as occasional events. Must be available to attend in-person meetings as required.
Board Meetings: At present the board meets monthly. Every third board meeting is held in person in a Dublin City location. The other board meetings are held online and take place in the evening, usually from 6pm-7.30pm.
