First Stage Researcher (R1) (Up to the point of PhD)
Not funded by a EU programme
About
Outline
This project provides the opportunity for a student to complete a Level 9 Masters Degree by research specialising in the environmental field and most specifically in river and sediment analysis and modelling, sediments and water quality. The successful research student will be based on the MTU Cork Campus.
Project Description
The project involves the analysis and modelling of hydrological and sediment impacts associated with forestry operations in Ireland. Project work includes data collection and sediment sampling, testing and analysis at a range of river catchments sites and hydrological modelling at a catchment level.
The project is supported and funded through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and is led by the School of Civil Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD). The overall project team includes researchers and postgraduate students from UCD and MTU.
The project builds on previous sediment-related research work undertaken in MTU and in UCD. The project will be informed by the extensive sediment and hydrological research knowledge developed here in MTU over the past 15 years in this research area and also informed by the expert knowledge and long-standing research work undertaken within the School of Civil Engineering in UCD.
The project will include:
1. Literature Review on river sediments and related impacts
2. Sediment sampling & testing (at a range of field sites)
3. Data Analysis including turbidity, suspended sediment and river flow analysis
4. Application of a hydrological model
5. Interaction with Project Partners and a range of Stakeholders
6. Production of Technical Reports as required
7. Completion of a Masters Research Thesis
The project will include literature review, fieldwork, laboratory testing, data analysis, hydrological modelling analysis and detailed assessment. It will also involve close collaboration with UCD and significant interaction with Coillte and a range of other relevant stakeholders. The project will involve travel to and from sites and travel to project meetings and conferences as required.
What is funded
Note: This is a funded research project, postgraduate fees will be paid from the project. A student stipend will also be paid monthly for a period of 18 months.
Duration
18 Months
The position is open to graduates of Level 8 Honours Engineering Degree Programmes (e.g., Environmental/Civil/Structural) or to graduates of Level 8 Honours Science Programmes (e.g., Environmental Science). A minimum of a Second Class Honours Grade 2 is required.
The responsibility for the funding offers published on this website, including the funding description, lies entirely with the publishing institutions. The application is handled uniquely by the employer, who is also fully responsible for the recruitment and selection processes.
