Visual Media Journalist
Contract Position; Fixed Term; 6 Months
Location: The Irish Times HQ, Tara Street Dublin 2
Hours: Full-Time, 37.5 Hours per week (The role follows a nine-day fortnight schedule, including availability for weekend work).
Role Overview:
The Visual Media Journalist will produce high-quality video content for The Irish Times across online, and social media platforms. They will cover a variety of news assignments, carry out internal requests from other Editorial departments, and longer-term feature work across multiple locations and events. The role requires strong technical, editorial, creative and video editing skills, ensuring that our video journalism maintains the highest production values.
Key Responsibilities:
* Capture and produce high-quality videos under the direction of the Visual Media Editor, Deputy Visual Media Editor, and Assistant Visual Media Editor.
* Cover a variety of breaking news assignments, internal requests, and longer-term feature work across multiple locations and events.
* Generating and pitching ideas for the daily news agenda and longer-term video/photography projects
* Shoot and edit both short- and long-form video content to meet editorial and audience needs.
* Shoot, edit and conduct post-production work on photographs when required
* Supply content in various formats suitable for print, online, and social media. Training will be provided where new skills in emerging formats and technologies are required.
* A keen eye for video graphics and an understanding of how to visualise diverse strands of information/figures/video content together
Additional Duties:
* Occasional work beyond regular responsibilities, including outreach, organising visual shoots and assisting with cross-departmental editorial projects.
* Any other tasks or assignments as required by the Editor.
Requirements:
* A strong background in visual media production, with experience in shooting hi-end video.
* Strong proficiency in all aspects of editing software for video production.
* Strong editorial judgement and understanding of the news cycle.
* A keen understanding of digital publishing and audience engagement strategies.
* The ability to work effectively within a fast-paced news environment and ability to meet tight deadlines.
* An eye for how to create visually distinct video work and how to present projects in a unique manner.
Desirable:
* Photographic skills a distinct advantage
* Experience interviewing subjects in delicate/challenging situations
* Strong organisational skills and experience using content/image management systems
* A clean driving license and regular access to a licensed vehicle
