Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowships in Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences
Our Department of Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences supports exceptional early-career scientists with diverse interests and research goals.
Fellows pursue independent research projects while collaborating with one or more faculty members within the department. Each fellow is assigned a faculty mentor who provides guidance and support throughout their appointment.
MIT postdoctoral researchers have access to valuable resources, including mentoring and career development opportunities, to enhance their professional growth.
The Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Program appoints new fellows annually through a competitive process. Appointments are for two years, providing a stable foundation for fellows to focus on their research.
Each selected fellow will be appointed to a named fellowship, such as the Crosby Fellowship, the Houghton Fellowship, or the Lorenz Fellowship. Houghton fellows may also contribute to educational activities in the department, working closely with their faculty mentor to determine the scope of their involvement.
Application Information
Applications are accepted on a annual basis. To apply, submit the following:
* A single PDF file containing your curriculum vitae, list of publications, and a two-page plan outlining your proposed research project
* Three reference letters from academic or professional colleagues
Applicants must fill out a common application form through Academic Jobs Online. This will generate instructions for referees to upload their letters.
The start date is flexible, but should ideally fall between June 1 and January 31 of each year. Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. by the start date, but not more than three years prior to the start date. If not selected for a named fellowship, applicants will automatically be considered for open postdoctoral positions in their area of expertise at MIT.
MIT is an equal employment opportunity employer, committed to diversity and inclusion. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without discrimination based on race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, ancestry, or national origin.
