Senior Researcher in Advanced Photonic Packaging, Processes and ModellingContract :Full Time/Fixed TermRole DescriptionThe Photonics Packaging Group at the Tyndall Institute invites applications for a key position as Senior Researcher II in Advanced Photonic Packaging, Processes and Modelling. This role is focused on driving innovative research and development in photonics, with a strong emphasis on transitioning research to manufacturing, developing packaging processes, and advancing modelling and simulation methods for photonic systems.The successful candidate will lead design and simulation efforts within the group, including cost modelling and the optimisation of photonic packaging processes and systems. Key responsibilities include developing advanced packaging processes, conducting advanced modelling, facilitating the transition of research outcomes to manufacturable solutions, and exploring novel applications using state-of-the-art equipment.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and simulate advanced packaging solutions, focusing on integrating photonic and electronic components.Develop and implement new advanced optical packaging processes.Collaborate with researchers in optical packaging to design and refine packaging solutions.Operate and optimise state-of-the-art packaging equipment.Supervise and mentor research staff and students.Manage multiple aspects of research projects, including planning, execution, and documentation.Prepare and submit detailed technical reports and publications on research outcomes, with a focus on translating findings into manufacturable solutions.Support the preparation and submission of research proposals to secure external funding.Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management Systems, Health and Safety standards, and other regulations.To carry out any additional duties that may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the postEssential CriteriaPhD qualified with typically of six years of experience in photonics, optical engineering, or a closely related field.Demonstrated expertise in the design and simulation of micro-optic solutions.Experience in developing innovative optical packaging processes, with proficiency in using advanced packaging equipment.Proven ability to lead research projects and collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams.Demonstrated ability to build academic and industry partnerships in the area of photonics packaging.Strong communication skills, with experience presenting technical information at international conferences.Desirable CriteriaEvidence of entrepreneurial experience and creative skills/creativityA record of successful funding acquisition for research projects.Experience with optical system development, from design to prototype.Proficiency in the mechanical design of photonic systems using advanced CAD tools.Familiarity with applying photonics to various application areas, particularly in communications.Experience managing European-funded research projects, such as Horizon Europe.Expertise in reporting project updates, including presenting results to European Commission reviewers.Appointment may be made on the Admin II Grade 6a Scale B (new entrants) salary €69,932 - €88,584 per annum.
