Position Description
ESB Trading delivers optimisation, risk management and wholesale market access to ESB's Generation portfolio and to its third-party customers.
Trading plays a critical role in delivering value to ESB through management of its generation and supply business in ISEM and GB.
The Portfolio Optimisation and Renewable Origination Team
The Portfolio Optimisation and Renewable Origination team is a key part of Trading's Front office area.
This team is responsible for optimising revenue streams from our generation portfolio which involves dynamically trading the output of the assets typically from one month out to three years.
Central to this is devising hedging strategies, pricing power products, and maximising value from the Capacity Auctions with the ISEM and GB markets.
In addition, responsibility for the delivery of value through opportunities with renewable assets (both internally and externally), the origination of PPA contracts and other commercial arrangements lies within this team.
Maintaining commercial relationships internally with ESB and externally with counterparties around the renewable and thermal portfolios is a key focus at the heart of this team.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will support the implementation and delivery of trading strategies and capacity market participation for all ESB's Generation assets in ISEM and GB.
* Analysing and preparing data to support decisions around hedging Gas, Power and Carbon within an agreed risk management framework.
* Hedging ISEM power through trading on the OTC, directed contracts and selling power to Electric Ireland.
* Delivering the Carbon position management process for the ESB portfolio.
* Managing the FX exposure resulting from trading activities.
* Supporting the Capacity operational process for the existing ISEM and GB portfolio.
* Performing regular analysis on the performance of the portfolio to provide information for key management reports.
* Ensuring key process documentation and controls are kept relevant and reviewed regularly.
* Carrying out testing of trading and fuel pricing systems where required.
* Operating within the overall risk framework and associated governance documents
* Gaining a good understanding of the energy markets across ISEM and GB and using this knowledge to enhance day to day activities and analysis.
* Support and champion the values and cultural attributes of ESB through open communication, team-working and innovation.
Experience and Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
* At least 5 years relevant work experience, preferably in the energy industry.
* A primary degree in a relevant numerical/commercial discipline or equivalent work experience.
* A strong numeric and analytical background with excellent attention to detail.
* Proficient Excel skills with the ability to effectively model and analyse positions and strategies in the energy market.
* Good commercial awareness and ability to recognise and pursue opportunities to deliver value.
Desirable qualifications include knowledge and understanding of the Ireland and GB energy and commodity markets including gas, coal, oil and carbon. Additionally, the following skills would be advantageous:
* Experience of working from own initiative, taking ownership of work/projects and delivering team objectives.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships across different business units.
* Willingness to tackle issues and overcome problems by working with others and developing creative solutions.
* Understanding of market and financial risk.
* Database applications and statistical tool skills e.g., SQL, Python, Management Studio, VBA, PLEXOS etc.
