Job Description
The Medicine and Emergency Directorate (MED) is a clinical governance structure established in 2014. It includes all specialties in Internal Medicine, with a focus on safety, quality, patient experience, access, and flow.
Department of General Medicine
The division of internal medicine at St. James's Hospital focuses on the care of acute emergency medical admissions. The department has a busy clinical service and a vibrant research function, contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical education.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Be responsible for the safe and efficient assessment of patients
* Work under consultant supervision to lead the resuscitation of critically ill and injured patients
* Liaise effectively with other specialty teams regarding patient referrals
* Supervise handover at the end of each shift
* Balance service demands with personal educational needs and those of supervised doctors and medical students
Education and Training
* Participate in mandatory and recommended training programmes
* Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge through continuing professional education
* Engage in planning and performance reviews as required
Health & Safety
* Comply with policies, procedures, and safe professional practice
* Document and report near misses, hazards, and accidents
* Work safely with due care and attention to the safety of self and others
Administrative
* Ensure good working practice and adherence to best practice standards
* Promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the service
* Assist consultants in service development and policy implementation
* Maintain accurate records and provide reports as required
Eligibility Criteria
* Completed Basic Specialist training in the relevant speciality
* Post-graduate qualification advantageous but not required
* ATLS or ACLS provider certification

* Demonstrable commitment to General Medicine
* Good decision making and broad clinical knowledge base
* Appropriate clinical skills and awareness of patient safety
* Ability to work efficiently under pressure and as part of a team
