Laboratory Assistant
Secondary School Laboratory Assistant required during Term Time to prepare experiments and demonstrations, make up solutions, prepare slides, order books and equipment, and tidy up laboratories in support of science teachers.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Main responsibilities
* Preparation of equipment, solutions, and/or teaching and learning aids for experiments conducted by teachers and students from 1st Year to 6th Year.
* Overall coordination of laboratories and stock room, including the safe storage of chemicals according to DES guidelines.
* Recording and mending/replacement of breakages.
* Auditing science equipment and chemicals.
* Cleaning and maintenance of apparatus and laboratories.
Main Duties
* Organisation and day to day running of the laboratories by developing an effective routine for all necessary activities thereby ensuring provisions of essential equipment and chemicals for the science classes in addition to all necessary Health and Safety equipment.
* File and maintain record of equipment (as per stock list) in the Science Labs.
* Keep up-to-date records as necessary and as agreed, including the following:
* An inventory of science equipment and chemicals,
* Material Safety data sheets
* Major Breakages and essential repairs.
* Managing chemicals and equipment e.g., ordering, and safe storage, preparation, dismantling, repairs, maintaining bulk supplies of stock solutions, disposal of solutions etc.
* Attend such meetings and in-service training courses as are necessary to keep up to date with developments in both science curricula and Laboratory maintenance.
* Liaising /attending staff meetings with the Head of Dept. and staff members in planning, implementing, and reviewing all term and yearly programmes to maximise usage of the science laboratories and equipment.
* Preparation for field trips, other outings, or visits.
* Set up/implement a communication framework with staff members to gain the necessary information re practical work schedules for all science teachers.
* Responsible with the Head of Dept. for devising, implementing, and observing all procedures as required in terms of Health and Safety legislation and compliance with the school science Health and safety statement.
* Responsible with the Head of Dept for the science budget and allocation of same to the purchasing of equipment, processing invoices and maintaining good records of expenditure etc.
* Perform any other duties as directed by the Head of Dept. or School Principal.
As and when needed:
* Assisting the Head of Department in consulting with vendors.
* Assisting in science activities e.g., science week activities and other ad hoc administrative activities such as keying in of inventory items.
* Assisting science teachers in conducting laboratory activities.
* Assist the Home Economics teachers in setting up practical classes.
HOURS OF WORK
* Normal working week will be 5 days, Monday to Friday
* Normal working hours will be between 8.30am and 4.00pm, with one hour for lunch and a 15-minute morning break.
* Flexible working hours negotiable
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate shall minimally have the following qualifications, experience, and skills:
* Familiarity and experience in managing a wide range of laboratory equipment and solutions.
* An understanding of hazards involved in using a wide variety of laboratory equipment and substances.
* Have a familiarity with calculations involved in making up solutions to the correct concentrations.
* It would be desirable to have relevant experience and knowledge working as a Science Laboratory Assistant in a school environment.
SALARY
Salary commensurate with experience.
