Conservation Keeper – Kilcoole Little Terns (Wicklow) – Summer 2024
Position Status : Open
Kilcoole Little Tern Conservation Project
Location: Kilcoole Beach, Co. Wicklow
Department: Conservation – Species & Land Management
Job Summary:
BirdWatch Ireland is seeking to recruit suitably experienced Conservation Keepers for a night warden role at the Little Tern colony in Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow. This position involves the management of foxes and other generalist predators to minimise the risk to the nesting colony. The role is for night shifts, 10pm-6am, and involves patrolling a small area of beach through the night.
The colony is monitored 24/7 through the breeding season to ensure nesting success and Kilcoole now hosts Ireland’s largest Little Tern colony with more than half of the Irish population, thanks to this successful strategy of monitoring, protection and predator management.
Salary : €150 per night
Duration: Start of May to end of July
Nights: We currently have vacancies for Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Priority will be given to someone who can cover both nights, but we can consider two candidates who are available to do one of those nights each.
Requirements: Prior experience with the management of foxes and other generalist predators for the protection of ground-nesting birds, or similar. Also necessary licenses for firearms used for predator control.
How to apply: Email the project manager Brian Burke at bburke@birdwatchireland.ie with a short summary of your experience, availability and contact details.
