The National Maternity Hospital on Dublin’s Holles Street was established in 1894 and celebrated its centenary in 1994. Employing approximately 820 people, it is the largest maternity hospital in the State as measured by annual deliveries and also one of Europe’s largest maternity hospitals. The hospital mainly provides obstetric, gynaecology and neonatal services. The original focus of the service was the poor people of the districts surrounding Holles Street, Dublin.

18 MONTH HIGHER DIPLOMA MIDWIFERY EDUCATION PROGRAMME COMMENCING SEPTEMBER 2025
This programme is available to General Nurses who are currently registered (or those eligible for registration) with The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), and want to become a midwife.
A minimum of six months recent nursing experience in an acute care setting is required at the time of application. Admission to the programme is subject to interview and acceptance by University College Dublin, the Hospital's academic partner. If successful, you will be paid a salary based on your incremental point for the duration of the course. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a HDip in Midwifery at Level 8 from UCD. You will also be eligible to register as a Midwife (RM) with the NMBI.
