Job Description:
CNM 11 Registered Children’s Nurse required for the Paediatric Diabetes Service at Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar.
To cover maternity leave. This is a very specialised service and requires the candidate to be a Registered Children’s Nurse with experience in caring for children with Diabetes or preferably have a qualification in this area.
Shift times:
08:30am to 5:00pm (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday)
08:30am to 5:30pm (Tuesday)
08:30am to 1:30pm (Friday)
The candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the Paediatric Diabetes Service, which consists of a Paediatric Consultant, ANP, and CNM2.
Daily Tasks and Expectations:
1. Monday:
o Equipment calibration (QC meter calibration once a week and DCA calibration once a month), inventory checks, and placing orders for adequate supplies for diabetes care.
o Planning, organising, and coordinating virtual and in-person reviews of children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with their families.
o Assessing and planning treatment plans for the cohort after discussing with the MDT team.
o Responding to emails and phone calls.
2. Tuesday: Clinic Day (Preparation and Review)
3. Wednesday:
o Planning, organising, and coordinating virtual and in-person reviews of children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes (addressing outstanding clinical issues).
o Coordinate with the Paediatric Diabetes secretary regarding dates for follow-up nurse-led appointments from the last clinic.
o Next week clinic preparation.
o Responding to emails and phone calls.
4. Thursday:
o Pre and post-clinic MDT meetings.
o Planning, organising, and coordinating virtual and in-person reviews of children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with their families.
o Responding to emails and phone calls.
5. Friday:
o Coordinate with the Paediatric Diabetes secretary in organising recall texts and calls for next week’s clinic, nurse-led and virtual reviews.
o Coordinate with the paediatric ward to ensure adequate diabetes management supplies for the weekend in case of an admission.
o Planning, organising, and coordinating virtual and in-person reviews of children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with their families.
Daily Tasks (Subject to change):
If a child with Type 1 Diabetes is admitted to the ward (newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes, stabilisation, etc.), tasks will be reorganised based on priorities. The focus will shift to providing structured education and support to the child and their family in managing diabetes and coordinating with the medical team in stabilising and discharging the child, followed by organising frequent follow-ups and continued education and support at the community level.
Professional / Clinical Responsibilities:
* Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based, care planning approach.
* Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
* Be responsible for the coordination, assessment, planning, delivery, and review of service user care by all staff in designated area(s).
* Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users according to the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland) and professional clinical guidelines.
* Practice nursing according to professional clinical guidelines, National and Area Health Service Executive (HSE) guidelines, local policies, protocols, and guidelines, and current legislation.
* Manage own caseload in accordance with the needs of the post.
* Participate in teams/meetings/committees as appropriate, communicating and working in cooperation with other team members.
* Facilitate coordination, cooperation, and liaison across healthcare teams and programmes.
* Collaborate with service users, families, carers, and other staff in treatment/care planning and in the provision of support and advice.
* Communicate verbally and/or in writing results of assessments, treatment/care programmes, and recommendations to the team and relevant others in accordance with service policy.
* Plan discharge or transition of the service user between services as appropriate.
* Ensure that service users and others are treated with dignity and respect.
* Maintain nursing records in accordance with local service and professional standards.
* Adhere to and contribute to the development and maintenance of nursing standards, protocols, and guidelines consistent with the highest standards of patient care.
* Evaluate and manage the implementation of best practice policy and procedures, admission and discharge procedures, control and usage of stocks and equipment, grievance and disciplinary procedures.
* Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics, and legislation.
* In consultation with the DNM and other disciplines, implement and assess quality management programmes.
* Participate in clinical audits as required.
* Initiate and participate in research studies as appropriate.
* Devise and implement Health Promotion Programmes for service users as relevant to the post.
* Operate within the scope of practice - seek advice and assistance from the manager with any cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of professional competence in line with principles of best practice and clinical governance.
