Title: Clinical Research Nurse
Department: Neurology (Epilepsy)
Tenure: Specified purpose contract
Work Hours: 0.2 - 0.4 FTE. Role will initially be for 24 months, with possibility to extend. Flexible working option normally within the hours of 08.00 to 17.00 Monday to Friday as agreed.
Location: FutureNeuro Research Centre, RCSI, 123, St Stephens Green (main location) and Dept. of Neurology, Beaumont Hospital (secondary location).
Reporting to: Professor Norman Delanty, Consultant Neurologist
Salary: CNM point 1-2 on HSE pay scale, depending on experience.
Proposed Start Date: February 2025
The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary academic and clinical team, hosted by RCSI. By working closely with clinicians, researchers and patients, they will provide coordination expertise to enable the continuation and expansion of patient-involved epilepsy studies spanning genomics, digital health and early-stage clinical trials. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the smooth running of our epilepsy studies in line with best-practice in patient recruitment and participation. They will support epilepsy researchers based primarily in RCSI and Beaumont hospital, with the potential to support cross-centre studies in partner sites (CUH, St James Hospital).
Specifically, the duties of the post are:
* To oversee and streamline the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for patient recruitment and consenting in accordance with best practice in clinical research protocols and Good Clinical practice.
* To provide guidance in patient recruitment across a number of sites at any one time and where required, to participate in patient recruitment.
* To access the epilepsy electronic record to identify and review suitable patients according to study criteria.
* To provide mentorship to non-clinical researchers on study set-up and specifically, to contribute clinical input to studies, by providing guidance on areas such as clinical data quality or data access requirements.
* To identify and, where possible, pre-empt any issues related to patient recruitment in a timely manner and communicate clearly the issue and possible solutions with the Principal Investigator and research team.
* To maintain familiarity of relevant legislation and guidelines pertaining to patient consent for participation in research studies and help implement these guidelines to improve FutureNeuro-led studies.
* To coordinate the monthly epilepsy genetics multi-disciplinary team meetings, providing clinical history for each study case and working closely with the clinical genetics, neurologists and researchers team.
* To be responsible for any patient follow-up after these meetings.
* To support the expansion of patient-engaged research across the FutureNeuro centre by identifying potential patient contributors in liaison with the PPI Lead.
* To champion patient participant confidentiality and dignity across our clinical research studies.
* To provide clinical input, as required, to the preparation of ethics applications and regulatory documentation.
* To develop and maintain relationships with key hospital and regulatory contacts appropriate to the role.
* To participate in any necessary training as required to complete this role.
* To carry out other duties as appropriate to the post, which may be assigned from time to time by the Principal Investigator.
Qualifications
* BSc Degree in Nursing (essential)
* Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (desired)
* RCSI level 9 module for clinical research nurses or similar (desired)
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
* Minimum of 3 years post registration experience
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Good organisational and analytical / problem solving skills
* Interpersonal skills required to integrate as part of a diverse research team.
* Good IT skills including Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Desirable:
* Experience in the field of clinical trials and/or other academic studies.
* Experience in neurology nursing.
* Experience in translational “bench to bedside” research.
* Proven leadership and management.
