Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher APC Microbiome Ireland
12 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-Time Post
Position Summary
APC Microbiome Ireland (formerly Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre) was formed in 2003 with funding from Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland and in conjunction with key industry partners. It represents a seamless collaboration between UCC and Teagasc Moorepark. It is widely recognised that the gut microbiota plays an important role in human health and has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Over the last two decades, APC Microbiome Ireland has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research, making several landmark discoveries and publishing over 3500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
We are currently recruiting a Senior Post-doctoral researcher to work within APC’s Gut Microbiome group, training individual bacteria and bacterial communities to deliver functional benefits in the gut. This researcher will work on reprogramming the microbiome through generating and characterising the learning in bacteria to understand the factors influencing this process. This post-doctoral researcher should be passionate about microbiome research and have significant experience in this area, including anaerobic microbiology, molecular biology, and fermentation technology.
The role will include and require:
1. Experience with culturing gut anaerobes.
2. Hands-on experience with in vivo and/or ex vivo models, such as fermentation.
3. Experience with investigating the microbiome and the necessary wet-lab skills (e.g., Nucleic acid extraction, qPCR, NGS library preparation).
4. Proven ability to design, manage, and conduct independent research to a high level.
UCC is an accredited research organisation and can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.
