Engineering Operations Technician Intern
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is growing rapidly, and we are looking for a Data Center Engineering Operations Technician Intern to join our expanding Infrastructure Operations team.
This committed group works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services. Specifically, this intern will work to ensure that the data center's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing operates at 100% availability while maintaining first-class customer service to the teams and groups within the data centers.
The Data Center Engineering Operations Technician Intern will assist with operating and maintaining all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center. The intern serves as a technical resource to support Amazon within its owned and operated data centers. Data center equipment that supports mission-critical servers must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. Our interns are also tasked with driving innovation while reducing operational costs in the facilities. They are Amazon’s front line responders for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, and building automation systems.
This role starts in January and February 2025 and lasts for 20 weeks.
Responsibilities:
1. Maintain mechanical and electrical equipment
2. Assist root cause analysis of equipment failures
3. Assist in troubleshooting of facility and rack-level events within internal SLA
4. Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to while performing work
5. Take daily operational readings of all mechanical and electrical equipment
6. Able to work a 12 hour shift (rotating 3 to 4 day work weeks)
7. Utilize internal CMMS to manage building workflows
Physical Requirements
1. Walk job sites in uneven terrain.
2. Work at heights and from ladders.
3. Regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unassisted and participate in group lifts for 50 pounds or more.
4. Coordinate body movements when using tools or equipment.
5. Reach and stretch to position equipment and fixtures while maintaining balance.
6. Bend or twist the body into unusual positions while working.
7. Perform physical tasks all day without becoming overly tired.
8. Perform extended site rounds that could include long distances of walking and long periods of time being away from a desk.
9. Use hands to manipulate small wires and objects.
10. Push or pull heavy objects into position.
11. Work in a noisy environment.
12. Work shifts longer than 8 hours to support 24/7 operations (covering both night and day shifts).
13. Work at depths, such as under raised floors.
14. Work support could include travel to more than one site location (travel less than 25% of time).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• In pursuit of or obtained Bachelor’s Degree within a relevant field such as mechanical/electrical engineering OR • In pursuit of or obtained certification from a Technical/Trade school program (HVAC, electrician, facilities maintenance, or similar) • English language proficiency, both written and verbal • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, displaying strong time management skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in project or program management • Understanding of mechanical systems (Mechanical, HVAC systems, Controls)
