Reports to: Senior Manager, Manufacturing Systems
Position Summary
Our client is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join their team at a state-of-the-art drug product manufacturing facility in the midlands. The successful candidate will be responsible for the configuration, operation, maintenance, and administration of automation systems, including process control, facility control, and data historian systems. This role supports manufacturing systems and utility operations (both GMP and GEP) from a sustaining perspective. The position reports to the Senior Manager of Manufacturing Systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Configure and implement automation systems independently or in collaboration with third-party system integrators.
2. Manage third-party vendors and system integrators for both project-based and ongoing support activities.
3. Provide technical guidance to the in-house automation team on system configuration, integration, and troubleshooting.
4. Develop, review, and approve technical documentation and project standards.
5. Offer automation expertise to engineering and operations teams for both new design and sustaining activities.
6. Create and maintain SOPs to ensure compliance and effective management of all automation systems.
7. Ensure all systems are delivered, maintained, and operated in a compliant and qualified state.
8. Support validation and qualification activities.
9. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize equipment performance.
10. Support and deliver training on automation systems to relevant personnel.
11. Implement automation solutions across various platforms in accordance with site change control procedures.
12. Lead internal automation projects when required.
13. Coordinate with project leads to align with priorities and timelines.
14. Act as a delegate for the Senior Manager when necessary.
15. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
1. Minimum 8 years of experience in automation, supporting GMP manufacturing environments.
2. At least 8 years of experience in a Fill Finish manufacturing facility.
3. Proficient in Siemens TIA and non-TIA platforms, WinCC, Desigo, AVEVA (formerly Wonderware) InTouch, and Historian systems.
4. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
5. Proven experience managing and collaborating with system integrators.
6. Strong background in supporting automated systems in a manufacturing setting.
7. Capable of developing scope and cost estimates to support NPI (New Product Introduction) projects.
8. Familiar with controls networking and communications (Profibus, Ethernet).
9. Experience with OSI PI Historian, SQL Server, and virtualization platforms is advantageous.
10. Familiarity with IT systems, change control processes, and deviation investigations.
11. Strong understanding of cGMP standards and GAMP best practices for biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
12. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
13. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
