Charity Trustee – Legal Role
The Organisation: The Neurology Support Centre is a Sligo-based charity, serving those in the Northwest impacted by a neurological condition. Our mission is to provide a range of quality services, supports, and activities that will improve the quality of life for all those impacted by a neurological condition; to advocate for improved neurology services locally and nationally; and to support the provision of clinical neurological services in our local hospitals. Our member services include Peer Support Groups, Counselling, holistic therapies including Reflexology and Neuro-reflexology, and other recreational activities including Art, gardening, exercise, etc. We are currently part-funding a two-year postgraduate bursary in conjunction with ATU Sligo, aimed at developing a remote platform for the monitoring of physiotherapy in MS patients. We have also funded specialist posts in the Neurology Department of Sligo University Hospital and have committed to part-funding a neuropsychologist to further expand the team.
The Role: The Neurology Support Centre is seeking to recruit a trustee with a legal background. The Board are particularly interested in individuals with recent and relevant commercial experience.
Charities Regulator’s General Duties of a Charity Trustee:
1. Comply with the Charity’s governing document
2. Ensure charity is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit
3. Act in the best interest of the charity
4. Act with Reasonable Care and Skill
5. Manage the assets of your charity
Your Responsibilities:
1. Providing input to the strategic direction of the organisation and contributing with insight, oversight, and experience at board meetings and any additional commitments
2. Policy development and implementation as required
3. Assisting on legal aspects of the organisation
4. Contributing to the development of strategic plans which comply with current legislation and best practice.
Desired Skills/Qualities:
1. An appreciation and knowledge of the Not-For-Profit sector
2. An understanding of and commitment to our mission and values
3. Commitment to the highest levels of corporate governance
4. Interest or experience in fund-raising
5. A relevant legal qualification, ideally with at least 5 years senior management experience
6. Expertise in areas such as Commercial / Employment Law would be an advantage
7. Strong business acumen and the ability to understand complex corporate governance issues and risk quickly.
Board Meetings: There will be 4 board meetings and up to 6 sub-committee meetings a year. Meetings are generally held in Molloway House, Sligo but can be joined remotely also.
