Job Description - Research & Development Engineer
What we’re looking for:
My client is a fast-paced, driven, and solution-oriented early-stage start-up, working to solve a major global health challenge. They are building a team of people who are excited by this opportunity and committed to making a real difference through their work. They are searching for a Research & Development Engineer to work as part of a multi-discipline team - striving to solve problems using an iterative design-build-test approach. You will need to think differently, be unafraid to make mistakes and get hands-on to fabricate, assemble and test microfluidic devices as part of an invitro diagnostic system. This will require working across all phases of project development, contributing and leading investigations and verification activities. They are looking for a person comfortable working with uncertainty, someone who enjoys solving problems collaboratively, and someone who can help us bring a game-changing platform technology to market.
You will be responsible for:
1. Fabrication, assembly, & testing of microfluidic components/devices, as part of an invitro diagnostic system
2. Measurement, quality control, and data gathering as outputs from relevant fabrication, assembly, test and verification processes
3. Development of CAD/CAM models, along with generation of technical engineering data (e.g. part files, component drawings etc.)
4. Development and verification of standard operating procedures for investigations, verification, and validation across all development phases
5. Input and management of planning activities in line with interdependent product development workstreams
6. Identification of design/process improvements, proactive identification of potential risks/issues, along with planning work effectively to mitigate these
7. Management of risk, cost, time, and product requirements in a structured manner
8. Working with external vendors/partners as necessary
9. Communicating and influencing across all levels, as part of a multidiscipline team
Their ideal colleague will have:
1. Bachelor's Degree in Product Design, Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (or similar)
2. Around 2 years' experience in a medical device, engineering, or technology company (or similar)
3. Experience with digital and physical prototyping, testing/verification, and lab/workshop skills
4. A good understanding of fundamental engineering/scientific principles and analysis techniques
5. Experience of 3D CAD software, technical drawings and simulation tools
6. Experience of part/system design and development, along with different manufacturing techniques, materials, and processes
7. A creative problem-solving mindset, good analytical and critical thinking skills
8. Excellent written and verbal communications skills
You might also have:
1. Experience working with CNC fabrication equipment (e.g. milling)
2. Experience developing CAM files
3. Experience with quality system requirements for medical devices (ISO 13485 and/or 21 CFR 820)
4. Direct experience of centrifugally driven fluidics

Some additional information:
As part of your day-to-work, you will be based in indoor office/laboratory environments and will work with biological agents and chemicals, using appropriate PPE and risk assessment.
The role will require you to:
1. Alternate sitting or standing at will within an office or laboratory setting
2. Use of IT equipment, including typing
3. Operation of basic test or fabrication equipment
4. Movement of materials with or without assistance with appropriate risk assessment
5. Fine manipulation/motor control (e.g. use of pipettes, scalpels, working with electrical circuits)
