Offer Description
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed-term position as a Research Assistant with the CerebroMachines Lab, at the University of Galway, Ireland.
This position is co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg North-West Europe (NWE), STEP4NAMs programme and is available from the earliest date possible for a duration of 2.5 years (subject to extension if additional funding becomes available).
The Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) STEP4NAMs consortium comprises 10 partners collaborating to advance the adoption of new approach methodologies (NAMs) as alternatives to animal testing. Within this initiative, the candidate will focus on using microfluidic chips tailored for lung-on-chip (LoC) applications to validate an Acute Lung Injury (ALI) disease model for drug testing. This research project will be conducted in the CerebroMachines Lab, led by Dr. Mihai Lomora, at the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences (SBCS), University of Galway. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the School of Medicine (Dr Bairbre McNicholas).
The CerebroMachines Lab operates across three key research pillars:
1. Development of biomimetic therapeutic systems for drug delivery.
2. Creation of vascularized miniature models of human organs.
3. Design of microfluidic devices for drug delivery testing and integration with organ-on-chip systems.
This project aligns with Pillar III and will involve close collaboration with academics, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) clinicians, and industry experts to ensure the LoC model accurately replicates real-world clinical conditions. This approach will enhance its relevance and effectiveness as a robust platform for drug testing and development.
Salary: Research Assistant salary scale €32,962- €42,943 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
Employment permit restrictions may apply for this category of post.
NB: Gárda vetting is NOT a requirement for this post (as appropriate to Child Protection Policy).
Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on 8th April 2025. It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date.
Interviews are planned to be held beginning – mid of April 2025.
