Senior Researcher – Electronic and Photonic PackagingContract : Full Time/Fixed TermRole DescriptionThe Photonics Packaging and Systems Integration Group at the Tyndall Institute is recognised globally for its innovation in advanced photonic and electronic packaging processes, including hybrid and heterogeneous integration technologies essential for future photonic systems. The group collaborates with academic and industry partners worldwide, leading initiatives that connect developments in photonics and electronics.The group is now seeking a Senior Researcher II in Electronic and Photonic Packaging. This role will initially focus on electronic packaging initiatives that align with photonic applications, advancing hybrid and heterogeneous integration processes. The successful candidate will play a central role in establishing and growing a dedicated research area in electronic packaging, with the support and resources to expand this function over time. As the role develops, the researcher will have opportunities to secure funding, build a research team, and engage strategically with stakeholders.Key ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Head of the Photonics Packaging and Systems Integration Group, the Senior Researcher II will:Provide technical leadership in electronic packaging aligned with photonic systems, with an emphasis on hybrid and heterogeneous integration processes.Manage a portfolio of technical projects and ensure timely project outcomes, with support and mentorship to develop advanced project management skills.Initiate and secure new project funding, including public and private sourcesBuild a dedicated research team over time, fostering an innovative and collaborative environment.Support and mentor researchers within the group, progressively developing team-building and leadership skills.Build relationships with project stakeholders, including academic and industry partners, and gain experience in fostering collaborations and managing partnerships.Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management System, Health and Safety standards, and other regulations.Essential CriteriaPhD qualified with typically six years academic and/or industrial experience.Strong technical expertise in packaging processes and materials integration, simulations related to electronic/photonic packaging, and micro-transfer printing techniques, with a proven track record in applying these methods, research or product development.Experience managing technical projects in the fields of electronics and photonics, with a willingness to develop further project leadership skills.A passion for building a research team, with an openness to mentoring and leading others over time.Interest in developing capabilities in securing competitive funding to support group growth, with initial experience or potential in grant proposal preparation.Good communication skills, including presenting research at conferences and industry events, with an eagerness to expand in this area.Desirable CriteriaEvidence of creative thinking and innovation in electronic and photonic packaging research.Familiarity with integrated photonics and microelectronics applications and industrial experience with semiconductor packaging technologiesExperience in setting up a preparing a packaging research strategy, including equipment procurement and hiring researchersExperience or interest in managing the transfer of research outcomes to early-stage or pilot manufacturing.Initial experience in proposal writing and securing funds from public or private sources, with an ambition to expand these skills.Basic understanding of project costing, contract negotiation, and preparing project statements of work, with support available to grow in these areas.Tyndall National institute has a proactive entrepreneurial culture and we welcome applications from candidates who possess entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including the creation of technology start-ups.Appointment may be made on the Grade 6a Admin II Scale (B) salary scale €69,932 - €88,58 per annum.
