Offer Description
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Assistant within UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science.
Field crop production is associated with a lower emissions profile than alternative agricultural enterprises by the Irish government with increases in the land area under crop production targeted in the climate action plan. Cereal crops (Wheat, Barley and Oats) form the backbone of crop production enterprises in Ireland with demands from industry increasing around the carbon footprint associated with these products.
Ireland and the European Union are highly deficient in domestic plant protein production, and as a result, EU food systems have become reliant on imports, increasing the emissions profile associated with these systems. The Climate Neutral Cropping Systems challenge has 2 main goals: 1) To reduce the reliance on imported protein and increase domestic plant protein production & 2) To develop novel husbandry methods to reduce the carbon footprint of these production systems. Crops including faba bean, pea and intercropped cereals will be key to addressing this shortfall into the future.
We are seeking a motivated, diligent and hard-working research assistant to contribute to the attainment of these goals. The successful candidate will be based at UCD Lyons Farm, Celbridge, Co. Kildare, W23 ENY2, with a proportion of time spent at the UCD central campus in Belfield, Dublin 4.
Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 17th of April 2025.
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
