About the role:
This role is based within Optum Insight as part of Payer Decision Intelligence. Optum is the technology and services division of UnitedHealth Group, the leading international health insurer. The primary function of the Data Science team within Payer Decision Intelligence is to build machine learning solutions and put them into production.
We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to enhance our capacity to develop the analytics in support of our business insights. Primary Responsibilities:
1. Analyze, review and interpret complex data through the development of case-studies, enabling the data to tell a story.
2. Build and maintain production-ready machine-learning models.
3. Identify drivers of patterns / behaviors uncovered in data and use these to explain business trends.
4. Contribute to the design and realization of analytical based tools/assets to identify and monitor non-standard claim patterns.
5. Engage with subject-matter experts to explore business problems and design solutions.
6. Present analysis and interpretation for both operational and business review and planning.
7. Support short and long term operational and strategic business activities through the use of data and develop recommended business solutions through research, analysis and implement when appropriate.
Required qualifications:
1. Degree in Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or similar analytic domain with a significant quantitative aspect.
2. Data Science experience with Python or R with demonstrable advanced proficiency in data analysis, statistical modelling, and machine learning techniques.
3. Track record of developing and deploying machine learning models in production environments.
4. Understanding of business strategy and ability to identify and champion opportunities for data science projects. This includes the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and build consensus.
5. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects, while meeting tight deadlines in a heavily matrixed business environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Advanced degree in an analytic domain.
2. Appreciation of ethical and regulatory considerations in data science and willingness to apply them in practice.
3. Experience in managing complex data science projects within a cross-functional team, to mentor junior team members and to foster a culture of knowledge sharing.
4. Natural curiosity to learn more, dig into details, and understand the key drivers of emerging trends and challenges.
