Position Summary
As our Principal Automation Engineer, you will:
1. Drive a culture of automation, innovation and continuous improvement.
2. Have technical oversight of multiple automation projects and provide support for engineers developing and implementing projects, while working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of automated systems.
3. Have deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and strong leadership capabilities to develop and implement automated solutions that enhance operational efficiency and product quality.
4. Devise, lead, and manage engineering programs from concept through to production readiness.
5. Mentor and develop engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
What you will do:
1. Develop a detailed understanding of best practices in product/process performance within the medical devices industry.
2. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify automation opportunities and prioritize initiatives.
3. Drive high levels of employee engagement through a highly effective support structure implemented for all engineers.
4. Develop technical solutions to complex problems requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
5. Lead the design and implementation of automation strategies across projects.
6. Lead design, development, testing & refinement of automated systems, subsystems & components.
7. Track project milestones and deliverables, managing risks and issues proactively.
8. Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to automation systems.
9. Support code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards.
10. Develop and maintain automation frameworks and tools to streamline processes.
11. Develop documentation for automated systems to allow for standardization, e.g., Dynamic URS, simplified change control for automated systems, automation systems specifications that meet the requirements of different standards.
12. Assist in developing training materials and user guides.
13. Stay updated on industry trends, tools, and technologies related to automation.
14. Provide training and support to end-users on new automation systems and processes.
15. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to report on progress and address challenges.
16. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance automation efficiency and effectiveness.
17. Become the technical leader of engineers working on automated systems, overseeing automation projects from conception to execution, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
18. Mentor and guide engineers in best practices for automation.
What you will need:
1. BS in Engineering Level 8 Honours Degree.
2. Advanced Degree desired, ideally Masters, Black Belt or PhD.
3. Minimum of 8 years of automation engineering/systems experience.
4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
5. Excellent presentation and written/verbal communication skills.
6. Technical leadership of engineers working on automated systems.
7. Demonstrable excellent analytical & problem-solving skills, a process improvement orientation, and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
8. Proven track record of leading successful automation projects and teams.
9. Proven experience with automation tools (e.g., PLC, SCADA, HMI).
10. Strong understanding of automated control systems such as Allen Bradley & Siemens, robotics, and industrial automation.
11. Familiarity with data analysis tools and techniques.
12. Demonstrable ability to work autonomously and lead significant projects and initiatives.
13. To be a team player, with a flexible approach.
14. To be a technological expert, willing to source, investigate and implement technological and automation advances, capable of technically leading a multi-disciplined team.
15. To be a confident and effective decision maker, with proven technical leadership ability to negotiate and influence others.
16. Experience in the Medical Device Industry desirable.
17. Experience in Automated Packaging, Blasting, Linishing, Polishing, deburring & Masking desirable.
