The Department of Mechanical, Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering resides within the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Process Engineering in the Bishopstown campus of MTU. The Department offers a wide range of full-time, apprenticeship and part-time programmes covering Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Process Plant Technology. The position is based in Bishopstown and the appointee will report to the Head of the Department of Mechanical Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering, Mr Niall Morris. However, from time to time, the appointee may be required to assist on other Cork MTU campuses. The role requires flexibility in terms of tasks and responsibilities. The position requires an enthusiastic person who is self-motivated and able to work with the minimum of supervision on a wide variety of tasks. Duties and responsibilities for the position: The range of duties assigned to a Technical Assistant 1 may vary from discipline /area to discipline/area within the University. The nature of the post requires the appointee to work closely with technical, lecturing and other staff. Following appointment, the appointee will be assigned to a particular location and post. The appointee may be re-assigned to another post dependent on the Universitys requirements. As the nature of the post may change from time to time, training and re-training will be provided where necessary. On assignment to the particular post, the University/College/School will provide a detailed list of duties and responsibilities applicable to the post. The duties specific to this role include the following: Assisting lecturers in advising students on the safe operation and use of equipment and materials, where appropriate and where requested. Assisting other technical staff with the organising, preparing and setting up of practical classes. Assisting with the carrying out of safety audits and equipment audits/stock-takes in all areas of operation in cooperation with other grades of staff. Re-storing of all tools and unused materials to designated areas, reporting all items mislaid or damaged, or in need of replacement. Assisting with the safe disposal of waste laboratory/workshop materials. Securing and storing of laboratory equipment, and consumable materials. Assisting with stock control of equipment and the clear-out of materials, where required, including examination materials, archival materials etc. Assisting students in their project work etc., (within reasonable guidelines) when requested by the Head of School, Head of Department, Head of Centre, Senior Technical Officer or other authorised officer. Assist with the preparation of a Workshop or Laboratory for a class or demonstration, ensuring that all tools and materials are prepared and available. Ensure that workshops, laboratories, classrooms and associated areas are kept clean, tidy and in good order This can involve specialised duties as required in some areas where heavy/deep cleaning may be required. Assist with the general upkeep, repair and maintenance of equipment and facilities including workshops, laboratories and classrooms. Deputise (where appropriate and within reasonable parameters) for Technician staff when not available due to illness or leave. Undertaking such other duties as the President, Head of Faculty, Head of School, Head of Department, Head of Centre, Senior Technical Officer or other authorised officer may assign from time to time. The successful candidate will have minimum academic qualifications and experience as follows: Essential: Have a good standard of education to minimum Junior Certificate (formerly Intermediate, or Group certificate level), or equivalent. Physically fit and in good health to undertake work of a physically demanding nature. Have 5 years relevant experience. Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate successfully. Ability to work effectively on own initiative and in a team environment with the ability to take instructions. Be flexible and have the ability to adapt to changing needs. Have good organisational skills. Desirable: Trade or Technical background. Have a good knowledge and awareness of Health & Safety in the workplace. Experience in the operation of machinery and hand tools. Have a full, clean driving licence. A working knowledge of computers.
