IMaR Research Centre Senior Researcher: Manufacturing Process Engineering The Munster Technological University- Tralee has established a world-class research centre in the area of Intelligent Mechatronics and Radio-frequency identification (RFID), i.e. The Intelligent Mechatronics and RFID Centre (The IMaR Centre). The principal theme of the IMaR Research Centre is the synergy between mechatronics, Sensors, RFID, Internet of Things (IoT) and Data Analytics for industrial applications driven by new technology, innovation and global demand. IMaR consists of two research strands Intelligent Mechatronics and Industrial IoT & Data Analytics both focused on the delivery of a wide range of automation, identification and manufacturing services. The overall mission of the IMaR Centre is to be industries partner of choice for the provision of innovative applied research. The IMaR Centre will serve a cross section of industries including Automotive, Telecommunications, Pharmaceutical, Production / Manufacturing, Retail, Aeronautical, Environmental, healthcare and Agri-business. The centre is core funded by Enterprise Ireland and houses stateof-the-art research facilities. IMaR is also a member of Lero:- The Irish software research centre. Position:We are looking for an experienced Senior Researcher to join the research team at IMaR. The successful candidate will collaboratively work and contribute to a cutting-edge research project for re-manufacturing process design and optimisation and machine monitoring in the manufacturing domain. The Researcher will have a track record of research and development in the area of automated manufacturing systems and an appreciation of relevant state of the art hardware and software. The Researcher will have extensive experience in industry or academia (or equivalent) in the area of manufacturing process engineering and will work within a team of Software, Mechatronic and Control engineers in the development of a prototype remanufacturing system which several diverse processes along with some manual process tasks for which advanced monitoring, analysis and tracking capabilities are to be researched and developed. The successful candidate will, in collaboration with other researchers, design and implement project tasks and will play a key role within the team in the delivery of critical tasks including industrial manufacturing process development / specification and programming. The candidate will be responsible for: Development, scrutiny and acceptance of functional requirements specifications, in collaboration with the research team including the industrial partners, Research, analysis and mapping of manufacturing processes (hardware and software) Research of remanufacturing techniques relating to battery technologies. Contribute to outline manufacturing line monitoring system design concepts and progress to detailed / optimised layout, Industrial traceability systems specification / procurement Data capture and analysis systems, integration and testing Providing support to collaborating researchers and working with IMaR and the industry partner to deliver a robust, configurable and effective prototype system, Contributing to project documentation including, risk management, change control and effectively disseminating the research results. Qualifications and Experience: Applicants are required to have a minimum of a Level 8 degree in addition to experience in an industrial or academic setting in the area of industrial automation and manufacturing systems. The candidate will have a degree in Manufacturing, Electronic, Mechatronic, Mechanical or another relevant engineering / science degree. A level 9 Masters qualification in a related discipline is desirable for this position. The candidate must have some project management experience and a track record of the research and development of automation and manufacturing systems in industrial or academic settings. Candidates must also demonstrate the following: A strong theoretical and practical knowledge of manufacturing methods: o Industrial manufacturing systems o Manufacturing Processes and Workflow o Process Mapping of production systems A broad knowledge of industrial manufacturing systems and techniques. Experience in manufacturing process mapping. A familiarity with industrial programming (such as for PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems). Proficiency in mechanical and electrical systems and an understanding of the Machinery Directive. A willingness and aptitude for hands-on development / experimental work. The following skills / attributes are desirable: An understanding of Lean and Six Sigma methods and their implications for automated systems development Familiarity and ideally experience working with automated / smart inspection methods A working knowledge of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies Familiarity with materials technologies, particularly GFRP and related production methods / machinery. An ability to progress, on time and on budget, product ideas / technical concepts to prototype/final products and work as part of a team to achieve this. A strong interest in emerging technologies and a strong motivation to develop a personal research profile and to contribute to the ongoing success of the IMaR Research Centre. Duration of Contract:This position is for a fixed-term contract up to 31st October 2027. Salary: An attractive salary on the MTU Senior Researcher scale will apply to this post, dependant on the candidates experience and qualifications.
