About Coimisiún na Meán
Coimisiún na Meán is implementing a new regulatory regime for online safety. As the regulator, we will protect people in Ireland from online harms and oversee the safety of large online platforms with European headquarters in Ireland, working closely with the European Commission and our counterparts across Europe.
We enforce rules that platforms must follow to keep their users safe. In time, we will establish mechanisms for giving advice to users and considering complaints when users are dissatisfied with platform handling.
Regulation of Broadcasters and Video-on-Demand Providers
We regulate broadcasters and video-on-demand providers, enforcing codes and rules on matters such as balance in news and current affairs, protecting children from age-inappropriate material, political advertising, promoting gender balance, and ensuring access for people with disabilities.
We review and extend these codes and rules to video-on-demand providers like streaming services and those uploading videos for commercial gain. We also award broadcasting contracts, review public service broadcasters' performance, and make funding recommendations.
We handle complaints from the general public about program material.
Supporting the Wider Media Sector
We support the media sector by running funding schemes for content reflecting and shaping Irish society, including Irish-language content. We have funded An Cailín Ciúin, the first Irish-language film nominated for an Oscar.
In the next year, we will establish funding schemes for local journalism and take initiatives related to the Irish language, sustainability, and equality, diversity, and inclusion. We promote media literacy and expect to take on a wider media development role in coming years.
