MTU Cork School of Music (CSM),founded in1878, is the oldest and largest conservatoire of music and drama in Ireland, with over 500 full-time students on its performing arts degree courses, and a further 2,000 students undertaking part-time conservatoire study. CSM is situated in the heart of Cork City centre, close to all the major arts venues and hosts approximately 400 performing events annually. The purpose- built and state of-the- art building features a 385 seat concert hall, 110 seat theatre, 52 teaching and practice studios, a full recording studio and suite, 60 Steinway grand pianos, 2 Junior Classrooms, 2 Piano Labs, lecture theatres, 2 audio labs, an IT lab, and the Off-Quay Bistro The position being advertised is aimed at a candidate who can demonstrate substantial expertise in Cello performance and pedagogy; has teaching experience with first and second level students; has an ability to support both the CSM part-time conservatoire lesson provision and the full-time degree programmes as well as some experience in chamber music performance and coaching. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the department and school in these key areas through active involvement in promotion and recruitment. The Assistant Lecturer will report to the Head of the Department of Orchestral Studies in the MTU Cork School of Music, located on Union Quay, Cork. They will be engaged in various relevant roles with the CSM, such as course boards, department panels and other groups. Duties of the Post: The Assistant Lecturer will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration. The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned by management including but not limited to: (a) Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by management of the Munster Technological University (herein after, the University), day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students, (b) Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities, (c) Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development, (d) Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as appropriate, (e) Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management, (f) Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management, (g) Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate, (h) Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements, (i) Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/school and of the University, (j) Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work. When an Assistant Lecturer is supervising a Tutor/Demonstrator a reduction in teaching hours will be applied on the basis of a one-hour reduction per three hours demonstration/tutorials supervised. The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week. Qualification Requirements and Selection Criteria for role: Essential: A level 8 Honours Primary Degree (second class or higher) from a recognised degree awarding authority in Music specialising in Cello. OR An equivalent relevant professional qualification obtained through examination. AND Not less than three years of relevant experience subsequent to obtaining the above qualification. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend for interview. This will include a short five minute performance as well as a teaching demonstration evidencing the candidates appropriateness for the role. A successful candidate will be required to submit a passport, documentary evidence confirming academic qualifications, and to undergo a medical examination.
