Meet the team
The work of RTÉ’s Data Protection Office (‘DPO’ – an arm of RTÉ’s Solicitors’ Office) is rich and varied, involving engagement with all staff throughout the organisation, members of the public, the Data Protection Commission, and other third parties. RTÉ’s Data Protection Office is specifically tasked with informing and advising RTÉ and staff of their obligations under data protection law, monitoring compliance with data protection law and with internal policies, advising on data protection impact assessments, and co-operating with / acting as the contact point to the Data Protection Commission.
The Deputy Data Protection Officer will report to and support the Data Protection Officer in managing and developing RTÉ’s GDPR compliance programme. They will play a pivotal role in ensuring that RTÉ is well-advised on its obligations, with effective processes and systems to aid and monitor ongoing compliance. The position requires a broad and applied understanding of data protection law, a passion for data protection by design, and the ability to manage and interact with a variety of RTÉ stakeholders. A good knowledge of GDPR-adjacent legislation including the AI Act, the Digital Services Act, the Digital Markets Act and the Data Governance Act will be required to properly advise the business across several functions.
About the role:
* Advising on responses to data subject rights requests (e.g., access requests, erasure requests)
* Advising on data protection impact assessments (DPIAs)
* Advising on e-Privacy and AdTech
* Advising on data sharing arrangements
* Mapping and advising on non-EEA data transfers
* Maintaining a data protection risk register
* Developing and updating data protection policies
* Advising on the operationalisation of data protection policies (e.g., RTÉ’s retention policy)
* Implementing audits (in relation to internal compliance and third-party service providers)
* Assisting with the delivery of internal training and awareness initiatives
* Deputising for the Data Protection Officer in their absence
* Advising the business on the interaction of Data Protection legislation with the AI Act and the delivery of a Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment.
About you:
* At least 2 years’ experience in a data protection role
* A proven track record in project management
* Third level qualification in a relevant field (e.g., law, management, compliance, data governance / information security).
* International Association of Privacy Professional certifications (CIPM, CIPP/E, AIGP) or equivalent are desirable.
* Critical thinker with strong communication and organisational skills
* Ability to deliver effectively under pressure whilst handling sensitive and complex issues and competing deadlines
* Committed to excellence, with a desire to take initiative and propose innovative solutions to improve on the status quo
* Keen interest in implementing strategic programmes of transformation.
* Expertise in the MS Office suite (Word / Excel / Powerpoint), as well as an aptitude for new technology.
