Job Purpose
The Clinical Placement Coordinator (CPC) will ensure a continuous theory-practice College link for the blended learning model of the BSc in General Nursing. The CPC will guide and support students and clinical staff in approved clinical areas, over the duration of designated clinical placement blocks across all stages of the programme. They will facilitate and monitor the learning and clinical competence attainment for undergraduate nursing students. The role is complex and entails engagement with link academic and clinical staff in the audit of the practice learning environments and engagement in practice learning opportunities, ensuring they meet the standards and requirements of the programme.
Key Responsibilities
Support of nursing students within the clinical setting
* Provide support and guidance for nursing students during clinical placements through regular contact with the students, their preceptors, and Clinical Nurse Managers (CNM).
* Ensure that the clinical learning areas in the healthcare settings and in the community where nursing students are allocated provide the optimum learning environments and are conducive to the learning requirements of the students as specified by the College and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
* Ensure that each student is assigned to and assessed by a designated registered nurse-preceptor and/or associate preceptor.
* Ensure that the nursing student always adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct of both Hibernia College and the NMBI.
* Advise the CNM and the preceptor on the learning needs of individual students as required.
* Support and facilitate College led reflective practice teaching sessions.
Support of preceptors within the clinical setting
* Advise relevant staff nurses and preceptors of the learning needs of individual students and assist, where necessary, in the implementation of supportive learning plans to facilitate student development.
* Support relevant CNMs, staff nurses, and preceptors in developing their preceptor role to ensure that the students' learning outcomes and competencies are achieved.
* Support and assist relevant clinical staff with the completion of the National Competence Assessment Document (NCAD).
Achievement of clinical competence
* Verify and support the students' progress through the NCAD in a collaborative manner with both the student and preceptor in accordance with agreed competence assessment procedures of the NMBI and the College.
* Liaise with the site-specific link lecturer from the academic team to support individual students' performance and special learning needs and where necessary assist in the implementation of learning plans to facilitate development needs.
General responsibilities
* Evaluate the quality of the clinical placements provided for nursing students and provide evaluation reports to the Programme Director (or nominee) as requested.
* Attend appropriate meetings within the College, and partner meetings where required, in relation to nursing student matters.
* Undertake any other duties assigned by the Director of the Programme (or nominee).
* Support the clinical sites in the development and revision of learning opportunities for the clinical placements in partnership with the CNM and nursing staff.
* Demonstrate knowledge of clinical learning environment audit processes.
Requirements/Qualifications
* Minimum Degree in IT or related subject.
* Be registered in the General Division of the live register of Nurses maintained by the NMBI.
* Have at least five years post-registration experience in general nursing.
* Have completed an approved preceptorship course or equivalent, within the last two years.
* Possess the requisite knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the role.
* Demonstrate commitment to professional and personal self-development.
* Be capable and confident in adapting and responding to changing nurse education requirements.
* Be a confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills, capable of building and maintaining relationships with clinical and academic staff.
* Be fully conversant with the Nurse Registration Programmes Standards and Requirements (NMBI 2016, and as updated) and all other relevant publications that impact on Nurse Education, Learning and Professional Development.
* Proficient in the use of Microsoft office suite, experience of Moodle, InPlace placement software desirable.
* Participate in activities that enhance their own professional development.
