Cyber Futures Running an annual Cyber Academy for Transition Year students, introducing them to the foundations of cybersecurity careers. The Nimbus Research Centre, MTU, is Irelands leading research centre on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber Physical Systems domain. From energy and water optimisation and conservation to smart city infrastructure, and Industry 4.0, the Nimbus Research Centre, in collaboration with partners from all corners of the globe, plays a key role in harnessing and translating the research and industry opportunities presented by the recent rapid advances in IoT innovation. In addition to cutting-edge national and international research activity, the Nimbus Research Centre operates as an Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway. The Nimbus Gateway transforms industry through innovation by working with start-ups, SMEs and multinational companies to deliver over 60 innovative smart projects annually, offering an ideal opportunity for researchers to develop their research from concept to market. The Cyber Skills project is specifically designed to address the critical skill shortages in the cyber security sector. Currently, there is a global shortage of cybersecurity professionals and Cyber Skills has been designed to enhance Irelands competitiveness in this context. The goal of the Cyber Resilience Team is to improve the security resilience of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to protect their business, social and global interests and responsibilities. March 2025 Page 2 of 5 Ref: 023474 Despite 95% of small and medium businesses experiencing a cyber-attack in the past year, most SMEs have inadequate resources to effectively address the risk. SMEs account for 99.8% of Irish enterprises and support 70% of all employment. The societal impact of improving the Irish SME sectors resilience to cyber risk will accrue not only to the SME sector but the wider Irish economy and the outputs of this research will have global impact. This project is funded by the Research Ireland National Challenge Fund Grow phase 22/NCF/DR/11210G and is supported by the National cyber security centre. Duties of the Post: The successful applicant will contribute to research and industry projects in the areas of cybersecurity risk management for small & medium sized businesses (SMEs), digital operational resilience and business continuity in a digital environment. This role will provide the successful applicant with the opportunity to work as part of a team identifying SME cybersecurity risks and developing user-friendly solutions aligned with current industry needs, involving close collaboration and engagement with relevant stakeholders. The role demands active participation in research fieldwork (quantitative and qualitative), and contributions to the design of digital resilience guidance and digital tools with the goal to improve digital resilience for small and medium businesses. The candidate will be expected to travel to user sites if necessary to meet with and/or validate research findings and solutions. Qualification Requirements and Selection Criteria for role: Key Skills and Experience requirement Knowledge of and experience in: o Understanding of how users interact with digital products and services. o General cybersecurity, business or AI concepts. o Research techniques including data recording and analysis. o Excellent communication and presentation skills. o Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. o Adaptable and willing to learn new tools and techniques as needed. Qualification Requirements for the Role Essential: An honours degree and a masters degree in a business, computing, science, engineering, science or equivalent discipline. Alternatively, 4 years relevant research experience will be accepted in lieu of a Masters degree. Experience in one or more of: Cybersecurity, Business Management, Data analysis/mathematics, AI. Experienced team worker.
