Purpose of role:
The Molecular Microbiology laboratory at CHI at Crumlin provides a PCR and serology-based diagnostics service to patients at CHI Crumlin. In addition, the laboratory serves as the National Pertussis Reference Laboratory for Ireland and participates in surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 for paediatric patients.
We seek a Senior molecular/medical scientist in the area of bioinformatics and sequencing to lead the development of methods for the sequencing and analysis of bacterial pathogens. The post-holder needs to be flexible, adaptable and have good communication skills as they will be working closely with the other scientists in the laboratory to develop the role.
This position will involve the development of wet lab sequencing for a variety of organisms using a number of sequencing technologies, and the subsequent training of other staff. This will initially include Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis, but the scope of work will expand to include a wider range of organisms on merging of the Microbiological Reference facilities located at CHI Crumlin and CHI Temple St into the new National Children’s Hospital. In addition, this position will involve the development of analytical sequencing methodologies, including but not limited to, the design and implementation of next-generation sequencing bioinformatic pipelines, creating and managing sequence databases, and the generation of programs/pipelines to automate computational analyses.
The post holder will also be required to support the SARS-CoV-2 surveillance by performing, analysing and reporting sequence data along with other scientists in the laboratory.
Essential Criteria:
* An Honours Science Degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Science, Computational biology/bioinformatics. Other similar qualifications may be considered.
* A postgraduate qualification at a minimum to Masters level in computational biology, computer science, bioinformatics or bioengineering or a related discipline.
* Greater than 2 years experience working in a clinical molecular laboratory and/or a regulated molecular laboratory (IVD, pharmaceutical etc.) and/or a Research Institution.
