Job Title:
Intern in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care
Job Summary:
The majority of the time will be spent in the Small Animal Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The successful candidate will provide full care to ICU hospitalized small animal in-patients, co-ordinate treatments for ICU patients with senior nurses, residents, and senior clinicians.
Responsibilities:
* Full care of ICU hospitalized small animal in-patients (medical and surgical cases)
* Co-ordinate treatments for ICU patients with senior nurses, residents, and senior clinicians
* Attend to emergency patients of First Opinion Clinic
* Assist Clinicians with procedures
* Perform routine emergency diagnostic procedures with student assistance and/or staff supervision
* Maintain drugs and instruments under secure conditions as directed by UCDVH policy; maintaining updated record of ICU Controlled Drugs Register
* Maintain hospital records, and checking that all appropriate information has been recorded daily, including pricing of procedures on hospital computer system and completing patient kennel sheets
* Make concerted efforts to help promote a positive image of the School and UCDVH
* Attend relevant ward rounds, journal clubs, seminars, and meetings
* Presentation at least one journal club and resident's seminar in the year
* Assist in the teaching of undergraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students
* Aim to produce one case report for publication or contribute to a retrospective or prospective research project within the year
* Maintain all hospital protocols with special attention to hand hygiene, barrier nursing requirements, and isolation protocols in accordance with UCDVH Infection Control Manual and hospital best practice to minimize nosocomial infections
